Have to head back to Ohio (currently 24) - leave Florida (currently 74) today, spend 2 days on the road. Big ice storm predicted for Charlotte NC, which I have to drive thru. Bummer
Be safe on the road, @Hoot Crawford ! Saying prayers for a safe trip up and back for you, and hoping you don’t have to drive in an ice storm at all. Check in when you can, so that we know you are okay......... we all worry !
Yup. I've said before that wind, snow, ice, etc are how the forest gets pruned of dead and dying trees. Days like this make me wonder how those in pre-modern times even survived it...or would want to.
That storm is more than just "predicted." It's here in Virginia and the radar shows it being over North Carolina as well. I open my back door and can barely see precipitation in the air, but can hear the eerie sound of ice pelting the trees in the woods. I hate giving advice to adults (it feels rude), but this is the stuff you cannot drive in...it's ice! If possible, stay put for another day. We're supposed to get up to 40' tomorrow with rain. I would thin the temp's gonna be higher than that in NC.
Again and non-stopping. Westchester co, NY is being covered by the white stuff; the snow man predicts 12+ inches and freezing rain. Will all this mess help with Covid 19? LOL Some say the cold will render the virous inactive...others bet it will be achieved by the hottest one. LOL
So maybe we've dodged a bullet. The 4" of snow that was supposed to kick this off never materialized, and we got 1"-4" of sleet mixed with freezing rain. Usually this would be bad enough, but since our expectations got set for worse, it's no big deal. Silly humans. The freezing rain stopped over an hour ago with some slight accumulation on the smaller trees, and although the online forecasts have not been changed, this is the current radar: I'm about where VA. is. Everything is sliding off to the northeast and into the ocean. The TV weatherguys are calling for some precip later tonight and maybe into early tomorrow AM...that blue ice band that's just south of Memphis is the source...but it doesn't look like it's going to amount to anywhere near the catastrophe they predicted. And tomorrow's supposed to get up into the mid 40s. Maybe I'll grill some chops for dinner.
john, By "silly people" are you referring to the nuts drivers speeding over the frozen snow? In two minutes I counted five cars speeding.
I almost commented that this weather is yet another reason I'm glad I do not live in the DC area any more. Those people can't drive on a good day...and every single one of them is the most important person on the road.
There's a few kicking around. If you've not discovered it yet, you can go to "New Posts"in the top banner to see activity on the threads you're watching. From there you can look to the right and click on "Recent Posts" and see the most recent posts eveywhere in the forum. I've been popping in and out with my Moisture Meter trying to find some reasonably dry firewood to keep the chill burned off. There are a few nights in the teens coming up. I have an area behind my garage I'm going to fix up this spring so I can by several cords so it's ready when winter comes. In the meantime, I'm reduced to picking out the "not too wet" stuff. I guess "seasoned" means they put salt on it, 'cause it sure ain't ready to burn.
Made it to the halfway point (Columbia, SC) without any problems. It was 91 in Florida, but is 38 here. Dry roads most of the way. Tomorrow (Friday) will be the exciting day, I'm afraid...
