Here was a story told to me by my dad. During the Second World War industries were in competition for skilled workers because the military was also looking for skilled help. So factories would keep as many as they could. The story goes there was a person applying for a job in the new company. The boss asked the normal questions and then said would you like to start tomorrow. The new employ ask what do I do, and the boss said for the first two weeks just walk around the plant and get familiarized with the working. After two weeks the boss called the new employee in and ask him how he likes his new job, The employee surprisingly said he did not like it, when the boss asked why he said there was a person following him everywhere almost like spying on him, The boss said do not worry about him he is your helper.

Watched a documentary last night on the Blitz over here, women took up the jobs the men did - and what a
task force they were - proud of those women for sure

I guess that was the case with those at war Patsy. I know that in the U.S., just about all the women I knew were involved in some type of war work. We gave a name to the ladies who worked the factories making ships, airplanes, and tanks; Rosie the Riveter.

Yes, very true Lois - my heart went out to these women working so hard and not knowing if they had a home to come
    back to

Yes, Patsy, that was true in the U.K. However, here in the U.S. we did not have that worry. We knew that Hitler did not have the air capacity to reach the U.S. which was why he was so desperate to overtake the U.K. Our main concern was U-Boats along our coast line. There were plenty as well as Japanese subs along the West Coast.

My father got a job deferment because he worked in the mines and the nation needed energy like all do especially during wartime. I guess women were not ready for Millie the Miner.

It was an interesting read on the Pit Brow girls. Scotland was mentioned, and many Scots were recruited to work in the local mines in the early 1840s after coal was found to be mine-able in Pennsylvania.
