For no particular reason, I decided to make a decent meal tonight to end 2020: -Salad -Locally raised sirloin steak cooked sous vide (This is the first local meat of any kind I've bought) -Homemade crab cake -Loaded baked potato (it's been in a brine all day) -Green beans (all the asparagus in the stores was horrible for some reason) -Cheesecake w/kiwi It should make up for last night's soup, salad, grilled cheese sammich.
We are staying in and dinner will be very basic. Not sure what I can nuke, but that will be it. Happy New Year!
-Salad -Crab cakes -Shrimp done sous vide -Loaded potato bites -Asparagus -Cheesecake or fudgesicle, not sure yet
You need to start this. I'm curious as to whether anyone here has tried delivered meal kits. The cost on some of them are about what I pay for groceries (but they don't include coffee and stuff like that.)
Weird that you should mention that. My daughter gave me a gift card to "Blue Apron" for Christmas. I have to admit, meals that I have to cook myself don't seem as much fun as restaurant gift cards. And there's no reason why you can't start the thread.
That's a good point. They start with raw ingredients, but I don't know if they include (salt-laden) spice mixes as well.
I went and found a recent Consumer Reports article on this subject. Here's an excerpt on the part that discusses salt:
@John Brunner Was just reading Mediterranean diet is still number one. I do try and lower salt for us both. Lower salt foods. I have never been a big salt person any way. Hubby is the salt person. Regardless I am making changes in our diet as he has gained a lot of weight and I need to maintain mine at best.
I've always struggled to gain weight in my life, not lose it. As long as I'm reasonably active, I have a pretty high-calorie metabolism...as long as I'm reasonably active. When I was working (even though I had a desk job), I would be active to a degree during my daily routine. But retirement has made a slug out of me. I have never been so sedentary for so long, and I have no motivation to be active merely for the sake of being active (in other words, I have no interest in walking unless I'm going someplace.) So now I've achieved my previously desired goal of gaining weight...in fact, I've over-achieved. My blood pressure has always been on the low side. Salt is not the enemy in my life...calories are. Or more to the point, the surplus of unburned calories I continue to consume (or to not burn.) Maybe I should incorporate some version of the Mediterranean Diet or some other diet in my life. I have gone meatless for a period of time to get my cholesterol down. And it is that time of year to do such things. If nothing else, I'll be in good company the middle of next month when I revert to old habits What I really need to do is set up a gym in my home.
Not sure what we're having today; probably a stirfry to use up some vegetables that are getting "iffy."
