I have tried a few grocery store fresh tamales, but they usually have too much masa for me. My Mexican son-in-law's mother can make them, though. I usually get them from the Mexican restaurant with chili gravy and chopped onions...YUM.
My Walmart only sells the canned ones. I can order some online...$60 for 2 dozen (includes freight, which I assume must be a special cold pak and accounts for the bulk of the cost.) I don't recall your living in an area with a large Hispanic population, Gloria. I'm beginning to miss my DC area food choices. Not only do I now want tamales, but I have a yen for a gyro, and I could really use a bowl of Phu soup. Ain't gonna git none of that here.
I buy them by the 24 pak, and they stay in my bottom freezer. I've commented elsewhere that I used to keep a couple of cartons of ice cream on hand (different flavors to mix it up), but I have no portion control, so I switched to fudgesicles and only have one after dinner.
I love canned aquatic meat Actually, I had the same thing for dinner not too long ago...with a salad and some cheese.
There is a grocery chain here called Food Lion. They have their house brand ice creams, and my favorite flavor is Black Cherry. There is usually a generous portion of cherries in it, but every once in a while someone puts a heavy hand on the dispensing handle and it's like getting a carton of frozen black cherries with some ice cream poured around them to fill in the gaps.
I gave in to my hankering for a gyro, so I drove about an hour to an outskirt of Richmond to the nearest Greek restaurant. It was worth the drive. Had a salad, a huge gyro, onion rings, and the waitress sold me on a piece of baklava for the road. I'll be going back. I've not had stuffed grape leaves in a long time, either.
