Cool, Thomas, now I have some insight about them. After listening to it, it sort of sounded like a mix, between the band, Queen and Meat Loaf, IMO.
Yeah, It’s hard to pin down. The DVD of the concert is well worth it, in my opinion. First class production, recording and collection of music from the past 2 decades. It really was a once in a lifetime show.
Great news! I found the entire concert on YouTube. They used to have it as one continuous video. Now it’s been divided into consecutive songs but when I went to this YouTube site, it brought them up in order of appearance to the concert. I guess the worst is that you might get ads between each song but it’s free. The last song BTW is literally telling the story in the original Stargate movie, you can even see the image of the gate on the LED wall at the back of the stage. Get yourself some good earpieces or find it on your big screen YouTube app. I searched on “Ayreon Universe full concert YouTube” and got it to come up. I’ve confessed on this forum previously to being something of a “Nightwish” groupie. The lead singer, Floor Jansen, has been making a name for herself as a solo artist as well. Nightwish encourages band members to pursue independent projects if they wish. She has very recently received some notable recognition. The first was when Metallica’s opening band had to cancel. They called Floor and asked if she would perform. That’s a nice sign of respect from a world famous band. The second was when she got her image posted in Times Square just a few weeks ago for being recognized as a Spotify ambassador. She’s an impressive figure on stage, statuesque, athletic build, incredible vocals. Here’s a pic of her with the rest of the band. In her heels, she is easily 6’4”. The top of the hat of the band’s founder still does not come to the top of her head and he is reportedly 6’3”. I personally think her physical size has something to do with her vocal skills. I heard a vocal coach make a similar comment, that she had more room to produce sounds others might have difficulty duplicating, especially coloration and range.
So, more on Floor. The band about had a panic attack. She had to cancel some remaining appearances because she collapsed after her last concert performance at Lemonsoft Stadion in Vaasa, Finland, and had to be hospitalized. It appears it is simply that she doesn’t pace herself. From what I heard, she had just finished a 16 song set list. This by a 42 year old woman, 7 months pregnant, who was just finishing up this leg of their live performance world tour (July 28, 2021 to June 17, 2023). The band is taking a break, they will not tour after the release of their next album.
These two singers sound sort of like to me. Not particularly these two songs, but the overall sound of the two band leaders, singing, "to me".
