My husband died at 63 indirectly caused by diabetes. This is why when I was diagnosed, about the time I first joined this forum and had the TIA, I changed my diet overnight. It's such a serious disease that lots of people diagnosed with it, maybe because of it being common, don't seem to take it seriously enough. I think high blood pressure is another one people don't seen to realize is so extremely dangerous.
Sorry about your husband, Bess, and for your diagnosis. I had a wake-up call a few years ago as being "pre-diabetic", having impaired fasting glucose. I know several people with diabetes and I got scared, so I shaped up my eating habits and upped my activity level. Thankfully I have been able to keep a normal A1C level since that time. My older brother is Type II and thinks his Metformin prescription "takes care of it." He continues to overeat carbs and does not own a glucose meter, which makes me crazy(er). My mother died of kidney failure as a result of high blood pressure, so I am vigilant about my BP meds. I watched her suffer through 5 years of dialysis before she died, and I definitely do not want to go there.
@Beth Gallagher My husband was like your brother. They kept changing his insulin until he was taking swine insulin rather than the synthetic. But it wasn't an insulin problem. He just simply refused to stay on a proper diet because he thought he could fix it with a shot. To me, making ANY dietary change to avoid additional medication(s) is worth it.
@Beth Gallagher I communicated with Phil somewhat extensively very long ago via email. Not recently though. Last I heard, he was contemplating moving to Canada..... Frank
Frank, I didn't know Phil well; only from his posts. I had noticed his absence because he was sharp and funny, but I didn't know he was ill. "Shalimar" on the other board posted about his death. I believe she and Phil were a couple and she is Canadian... so it would make sense that he was planning to move. Too bad when a life is cut short.
@Beth Gallagher She was, and he did. I had no idea you were involved with that forum. Cannot recall any user name there fitting your, er, profile as seen by me......I don't perceive much which is nebulous, or intangible. Frank
We have not seen @Holly Saunders since last Thursday, and I can’t remember if she said she was going to be gone fo medical reasons or not. Anyone know anything ? I looked on the SF forum, and she hasn’t been there since Thursday , from what I can tell, either.
I couldn't post on two forums. I can only get cozy with one group of people at a time. Anyway, please tell her I miss her being here.
This is a friendlier place, IMO. Plus the owner plays favorites with his admin powers. Probably the only control he has in life.
I looked at it 'once' that was enough for me - besides, I just prefer one forum, couldn't cope with two
It's not that it's friendlier here. It's that over there, you couldn't show the real you. It wouldn't be tolerated. Must be frustrating over there for you, wanting to unleash your true self. I will say 'three cheers' for Ken.
Well bless your heart, how nice of you to drop by to insult me since you have no idea how it is or is not "for me over there." I am always myself, take it or leave it.
