I prefer 10 to 8 which I did briefly try, you can add classic shell to 8 or 10 to create the old 7 style menu. see here The other day I inherited a used 4 year old laptop with Windows 7 starter in Russian on it, which you can't change to English. I spent all day yesterday with Lisa's help translating the Cyrillic and managed to partition the hard drive and put two copies of Windows 7 on it. I then upgraded one to 10 and kept the other as 7 because I have some old software that will not work on 10 and is obsolete. When I boot I get a choice of either 7 or 10 which works well for me. The free upgrade to 10 is only the basic one, to get the full edition with more control over updates and other features it's $120 see here
Not for me. I'll stick with XP Pro, and fool with MX Linux on the side. Every M$ version since Win2000 has been worst than the one before it, more bloated, more packed with corporate spyware/malware, and ever more anti-enduser. XP Pro is my line in the sand!
Good for you, Neville, but that sounds like you don't do online banking, do you? It's not possible to use XP for that since there's no support and it's not compatible with a number of banking apps, peripheral hardware and things. So I'm forced to upgrade and am using 8 at the moment, which is fine.
I had Windows 8 on my laptop and hated it, so I upgraded to 10 and it seems better for my use. I still have 7 on my desktop, and it is my favorite and is still (so far) supported.
I also used Vista and W7 and have also heard a number of techies complain about W8. But I, personally, haven't noticed anything disturbing. So I'll stick to it in accordance with the old dictum "Never change a running system." But I'm open to new things and will be using them as soon as I need them.
I don't often use our PC but I did upgrade to Windows 10 and see no problems with it. Then again, I use it only on the rare occasion that I need something not available in Mac OS.
I only have a PC, and am pretty clueless about these things, but I like Windows 10 just fine. The last version I got along well with was Win 7, and you can make Win 10 pretty much mimic Win 7 if you want to. There are a few things I don't particularly care for: It is tied too much to the Microsoft website. Don't know how to explain it in the proper words. Simplest example, the password for your PC has to be the same as the password on some website. Microsoft? As a result the rules for choosing one are more complicated. I wonder if you could even log in to your PC if internet access were down. It's very difficult to control updates. Just for fun I tried to see how long I could put off the last update. I was able to go for 3 months by being vigilant, but it finally outsmarted me. Having said that, the last update seemed to speed up the file storage and access significantly. Or maybe it was a coincidence. lol
I can log into my laptop with no internet access just fine and, although I think I have a Microsoft account, I haven't used it in years and have no idea what the password might be. One of the reasons I got the laptop I did was to watch movies and such while travelling on trains and planes without a web connection. I use it for other things as well, but those were the determining factors in the choice of what to buy.
Sure do! I use MX Linux for onlne shopping/banking, even though I am very very skeptical (if not downright cynical!) of all the blather about XP Pro being vulnerable. I don't see no reason to take any chances, since I am fairly comfortable with Linux now. I recently installed a browser called 'Mypal', a PaleMoon derivative, which has given new life to XP.....no more CA nazis blockading me from half the sites on the internet, it plays movies/TV shows out of the box, and so on.
Sooooo.....I guess that means that Windows 3.1 is totally out of the realm of possibilities............
Why shouldn't it be possible especially as long as you work offline or if you happen to like fixing things. DIY'ers like that. If you are not a tinkerer like myself, then other people often tell you what you need to have.
