I have Windows 10 on all my PCs including a cheapie 10" notebook I bought here for $50 last year, which I take on all my travels, it works well. I also often use VPN and Smart VPN here and wherever I go to other countries, so I can access all the UK broadcasts plus Amazon and Netflix. It also gives me security because everything is encrypted, and I always appear to be logging on from somewhere in Kent UK. PS: Classic Shell which no longer has updates has been replaced by Open Shell http://www.classicshell.net/
No problem. Sorry if that sounded abrasive. XP users are under attack at so many forums these days, I tend to go on the defensive early on, just to head off the horde of critics at the pass.
From what I hear, Win 98 is no longer able to access the internet, but still perfectly fine for offline work, if one had the foresight to 'bank' the programs and hardware components it requires. Win 2000 seems to be still able to handle the internet, and XP I can vouch for.
I am pretty sure that you can still connect to the Internet using MSDOS, so I would be very surprised to learn that you wouldn't be able to connect using Win-98.
My Notebook is Windows 10 and so far I have no problem with it and won't as long as I can do the things I normally do on the computer. My Toshiba laptop which my daughter was able to bring back to life for me runs Windows 8 and I never had a problem with that either. Of course my needs are computers are very simple...and that is probably why I don't notice any problems.
Thanks for the advice guys but whenever one is in doubt or want, check YouTube. So, that's precisely what I did. I did a search for Window's 98 disk defrag and proceeded to watch the whole thing. Great flick and gets pretty exciting around the 5 and 8 minute marks!! My day is indeed complete!
I miss Windows Defrag. I always wondered if it was nothing more than eye candy, though. There was something satisfying about having everything in its place.
I couldn't say for sure as I don't have Win98. I vaguely recall some Win7 fanboys giving me crapola on another forum for using XP Pro. I told them there are still plenty of users of Win98 and Win2000, at which point one of them sent a bunch of links saying that Win98 was only good for offline work. Unfortunately I did not save them, but I may of found one: https://www.extremetech.com/computing/245136-youtuber-tries-use-windows-98-primary-machine-2017
A week ago, I ordered a refurbished laptop with a new copy of Windows 10 installed, through Amazon. It came two days later, and the adventure began. I had no issues setting it up, and so far it has the looks and behavior of a new PC. I installed Classic Shell, and it has the appearance of Windows 7. I have transferred my music in WMP and installed a version of Win 7's Photo Gallery, for my pictures. I was able to reinstall my Office 2013, for word mainly. My old Win 7 PC was 4 years old, out of warranty and ailing. I gave in to the inevitable and seemed to have ended up with the best of both worlds. The other laptop is a Win 8.1. I never liked the look or feel of windows 10.
Now I remember what I didn't like about Windows 10 when I first got it. Maybe I'm wrong but the default setup seems to be geared toward touch screen. I hate (yes, hate) touch screen, or touch pads. Not precise enough. And sometimes it doesn't respond when I touch, which makes me have to check whether I'm still breathing.
When I first used the Internet, it wasn't digital. You browsed the web from a C:// prompt. It was before Windows. It wasn't called the Internet then, and access was only through a college account.
Just mentioning, for those who weren't into computers then, that there was a time when your computer and the Internet booted up to... C:// And you had to navigate from there.
