I am noting today that there are a number of pundits who're suggesting that the vaccine mandates could add evem further woes to the supply chain problems, especially the trucking sectors. Given the overall labor shortage, decimating it even more is a really stupid move, like tearing open a bad wound before it is given time to heal. You'd almost think the Biden administration is trying to actively kill the U.S. economy.
I understand the truckers have a less than 50% vax rate and are generally resistant to being told how to live their lives. California has requirements on what trucks and drivers can be in their state; Florida has no such restrictions. At least some of the ships that were waiting off California have transited the canal and are offloading in Florida, as they are losing money for every day they sit idle waiting to offload. California is also having trouble with the mandates and the unions I think.
I read this morning that shipping backup problems at California ports are getting worse, not better. The article said ships were now waiting a record 17 days waiting to get into ports to unload/load. With inflation and consumer prices hitting record highs, this is going to really hurt people who're on fixed incomes.

Yet another reason why we should be manufacturing our own pharmaceuticals. I heard a couple of months ago that some chemo drugs are in short supply, which is terrifying to cancer patients.

I have been reading about this for the last few days also. One of the truck drivers that I follow on X has written that truckers have been told that they have to have any trailer loads dropped off before Monday if they want them to be shipped, and also they have to pick up any loads before Monday, so it sounds like the shipping problem is going to be much worse by next week. The ports in the south and east are going to close, and everything is being routed out west, and ports out there will be overloaded. This means that if a lot of items are affected, we are going to have even higher prices for some food and other items. It is not good ! They said that the port workers are supposed to go on strike on October 1st, and the strike will affect us getting oil right away, so we should be filling up the gas tanks first thing, before prices go up and fuel shortages happen. If there are fuel shortages, truckers can’t bring food and supplies, so grocery stores will start having empty shelves in a few more days. Hoping that they can get the strike worked out so that the port workers go back to work soon, bu even so, we are probably going to have some shortages, and probably higher prices fuel.
I heard the Longshoreman's Union says they will do as little as possible if Biden orders them to work under Taft-Hartley. Lots of other stuff is brewing around the world that may affect the supply chain. China is threatening the U.S. to stay away from the Western Pacific and just fired a ballistic missile our way to emphasize the threat. Russia is also threatening to take action against us if Ukraine attacks them using American weapons, but what they will do is undefined. The Chinese are having a population collapse as well as an economic collapse, and we have made ourselves so reliant on China that a collapse there may take us down with it. Tomorrow, the strike is supposed to start. There are pictures of truckers trying to get to the ports to drop off loads and pick up loads that are waiting for them. Ve also have some kind of cell phone problems happening with Verizon, and I think also AT&T, where the phone locks into SOS. Mode. So far, Verizon has not said what is causing it or when they expect the phones to unlock back to normal use again.
I saw that bananas will be the first thing hit. No bananas east of the Mississippi if they go on strike. Other perishables will be next.
