We got a tv in 1951 and I watched both conventions in 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, and 1976. (No tv in 1972). Loved the roll call votes, even as a kid. After that, most states had gone to primary elections. That's when they became dog and pony shows. But I still watch parts of them. Sometimes I think they picked better candidates when it was done by horse-trading behind closed doors in smoke-filled rooms. {gasp!} The problem with primaries is only the die-hard political junkies show up to vote. This means you often end up with far left and far right candidates that the general public doesn't care for.
