This is the front of the main house...the service yard with the kitchens etc...are to the left and slightly behind the main house... Another view of the kitchen..on the left is where everything was ironed or pressed...
Alright. I just got back and almost fainting with delight at this house @Holly Saunders ! I did a quick skim and now going back to look at each spectacular scene of this fantastic castle/palace, whatever it is. It's like Downtown Abbey! But first, @Chrissy Page, I must say, your daughter's home is lovely! I can't imagine why you're not living there now, unless like me, you really value your privacy and independence. Now, back to the Kitchens, etc!!!
Ruby....it's an amazing place ..and I'm fortunate that it's almost on my doorstep.....glad you loved the pictures...I have loads....I go up there every summer, these ones were taken last July, but rather than take up this whole thread with the same subject, I think it might be best if I start a new thread in 'photos' and put them all there, but not tonight, it's nearly bedtime...perhaps tomorrow night here's a couple of final ones... As they had no fridges or freezers in those days they used to keep everything cool in the larder just off the kitchen, it's freezing cold in there and the window sills are made of stone and are very wide and deep, and as you can see they would keep food that had to be kept chilled in there..(incidentally all the food in the picture is fake)... Again just to reiterate...the jars and bowls on the shelves are very large...much larger than we're used to these days...
I don't know if you mentioned it at the beginning or not but what years would this house/mansion have been operational? When did people actually live there?
People were still using it as their private home until about 1948... Here's the history of it.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audley_End_House Unfortunately I can only show photos of the 'service yard' because no photos are permitted to be taken inside the main house.... Although the house and gardens are now owned by the 'public' and English heritage, the contents of the house still belong to Lord Braybrooke and his family.... here's an interesting piece written in 2013 about the family and who will inherit... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...angry-wife-drama-makes-Downton-look-tame.html
Thanks, will read it after .....talking to Terry, he made it home and can't wait to be in the hot seat tomorrow.
LOL...he'll have a brain like mush...we can ask him anything and he'll agree......let's ask if he's gonna leave all his riches to us in his will...
Lol, did read the article...liked the poor unwashed comment. What a mess though...all those wives and not one son. There will be plenty of fighting going on!
This mansion....you say two thirds of the place has been demolished? My goodness and look what's left!
I'm looking more at the old man that owns it. A little Botox and I'm on way to be wife number 4. I like older men...I wouldn't expect to inherit anything, just spend his money now traveling. we'd have fun!! @Shirley Martin , that's my title for a TV series. The Angel of Braybrooke Manor.
I read it all. So interesting, now the debate over the succession. Thanks Holly for all this, I just love it. I like to try to picture early people in such houses, walking about, working, playing, etc.
