Wow! Not anything I have read about. Sorry you had trouble, @Shirley Martin. Do you remember how much you took daily?
I've had to delete a lot of foods due to gut issues and the hard stool issue...See my Sluggish Bowel thread which I'm following now 19 days. I have 2 friends who ended up with afib and now after some years, it was determined they were not taking adequate mag....they take heart meds now And need to be monitored..
I know that magnesium is necessary for a healthy heart but I'm just telling you what too much of it did to mine.
What I've read is usually about Mg being used to slow the heart, but @Shirley Martin had the opposite experience. How about you, @Yvonne Smith ?
My heart was all over the place, @Don Alaska , with or without magnesium. Besides the atrial fibrillation, sometimes it went into tachycardia fits of around 150 bpm, even if I was just quietly sitting and knitting or reading a book. At night, it would slow down into the 30’s bpm, with bradycardia, which is why they gave me the pacemaker in the first place. It didn’t stop the arrhythmia or the tachycardia; but it did keep my heart from simply slowing way down and maybe stopping completely. The reason I took the magnesium was because it was supposed to help strengthen the heart, and possibly help keep it in rhythm better, which it had been doing until around the Christmas season this winter. Then, they had to reprogram the pacemaker, and do an AV node ablation; so now my heart is set at a low of 80, and is completely controlled by the pacemaker. It can no longer put itself into a-fib. However, my heart failure is getting worse, and my energy level seems to have bottomed out, at least for now. I am hoping that as the weather warms up, I will be able to do more again.
For healthy bodies there is virtually no risk of problem with any dose, but when ailing or on any sinthetic medication Both magnesium and potassium can interact with certain medications and conditions, and ingesting too much of either also puts you at risk for overdosing. =============== People also ask Can magnesium cause AFib? Especially in participants with a history of myocardial infarction, those with hypokalemia had a higher risk of atrial fibrillation than those with normokalemia (HR: 3.81, 95%-CI: 1.51-9.61). Conclusions: In this study low serum levels of potassium were associated with a higher risk of atrial fibrillation.Oct 15, 2013 Serum potassium levels and the risk of atrial fibrillation
On the heart scene, and it's true so much can be with our genetics. My parents both lived into 90's and their hearts just kept going, and also our hearts do skip beats and wear down with age. My doc was trying to push me to a cardio doc so they can get me on their bag full of drugs, but I won't go to a cardio doc..... I feel fine and take my supplements and my morning stretches and tapping work and trust I'm OK. No more alcohol and do believe the grape seed extract I'm taking now 26 yrs is supporting my heart. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21802563/
