Jake likes the Nunchkus aka nunchucks. Kids like seeing him practice with them. One day they ask him to show my mother, she was worried he would hit himself with them as the sticks started moving and disappeared. He reassured her he was careful. He busted his forehead wide open, blood spurred out, I thought she and I both were going to pass out.
His Navy freind, back from V.Nam gave him the sticks then he saw Bruce Lee and really got into it. Jake was really good with the sticks. He still has both sets of sticks, he can use both sets at same time.
In case some don't know what they are, video below,

"True story", I really took them seriously, after Jimmy my friend gave them to me, and I watch Bruce do them. I practiced with them every day between three trees. He had them painted black and they were all pretty, then when he came back several months later, I had worn all the paint off, practicing so much. He flipped out and said I can't believe that you wore the paint off already. I showed him how I could knock the bark off the three trees and he and all my friends told me I was the best with them, even when using two sets at the same time.

I really miss those guys, haven't talked to them in years now, and everyone lost touch. :(

What I don't like about them is just one wrong flick of the wrist and you can maim yourself or worse.
I wanted to take some kind of self-defense class but never got around to it.

Lots of things over the years. In order I think, IIRC:
    Kyokushin karate
    Taekwondo karate
    Uechi-Ryu karate
    Wing Chun Kung Fu
    Taekwondo karate
    Bando kickboxing and escrima
Jun Fan Kung Fu and Lameco escrima
    Muay Thai kick boxing

escrima (kali) did a lot with sticks but they are fixed unlike a nunchaku

That is lot of martial arts, that's neat Thomas. Also, the single sticks look safer to use to me. Only stick I use is my walking stick.

You have lots of training with all that. I haven't tried them without them being fastened together, it would be a new experience for me. I've seen several people use one stick before, and be very impressed by the way they do it. It gives you a lot of distance, to protect yourself against attackers.

I did judo in my teens, I reckon I could use it now if I needed to defend myself, I think with all martial arts you never forget what you've been taught.

Jesseca thats good to be able to defend yourself. I never took any special training, I did grow up with all boys one I fought with all the time, but don't think that would help me defend myself against a stranger attacking me.

Judo was what I first learned and later as a senior learned some TaiChi. It is amazing how they can work together and some new moves that work better for seniors can be developed. Judo and Tai Chi are about creating more force using less power than disciplines like karate.

The grappling arts were not that popular when I was trying different things. My loss. I think the martial arts experience is incomplete without them. Jujitsu is fascinating and effective.

If a person earns a Black Belt, by law, don't they have to have their hands registered with local P.D.?

Martial Arts today, most likely, wouldn't protect a person from a armed person. Martial Arts aren't faster than a bullet.
