Medicine has come a long way since my son went through his difficulties. Back in the 70's when the doctors were just starting to get a handle on some of these issues, these drugs sometimes were a nightmare, Ridlin, (There was another that went with Ridlin, but I forget its name.), was just beginning to show some progress, but for some it became a nightmare.

Young Michael was on it for only six months when I had to make the decision to go against his doctors. He had gone from a forgetful, reclusive, but happy child, to a screaming, out of control child that swore his brain hurt. So I took him off of the meds, and he went back to his normal self.

I ended up listening to my grandmother, and she explained that Mike's behavior was nothing new to the way children could behave. She encouraged me to give my son plenty of new and challenging experiences, especially ones that involve the whole family. That way he didn't feel as if it was all about him being different.

So my boys and I spent the afternoons after school boating on the rivers, and weekends boating up and down the coast around Sargent Tx. I taught my boys how to hunt, fish, garden and do whatever it might take to live for a few days out in the woods. We built several lean-to's, and even a large clubhouse for our Cub Scout group all out of the materials we found while out boating.

The idea was to keep their minds so full of enjoyable and challenging efforts that there was little time or chance for anything else. It wasn't a total fix all, but it had a better outcome for Young Michael.

I believe that today's medicines have come a long way since my son's day with them.

My daughter is an RN and her last resort was to have to use meds to help her son. Nothing else they have tried has worked enough so her son and his teachers don't have miserable school years together. His teachers are doing their best to work with my grandson but everything they have tried hasn't really helped enough either.

The Specialist in New Orleans will run tests, etc. and hopefully be able to help all of us know how to help our beautiful boy who we all love so much and want the best for. If meds are a part of what is best then we all can accept this as long as he does not have bad side effects, etc. from them that end up being worst than what they might be doing to help him with.

New members and guests, do you have a funny story to tell? Do you write poetry? Do you take fabulous pictures? If you do, we'd love to read and see them. We promise not to laugh. Except at the funny story. ;):D

I am a "people person" and all this isolation from the shut down is very hard on me. There are several days when I see no-one at all. I am 85 a female and I do clean my own apartment and generally keep busy. I read a lot and try to get out every day for a walk, but feel intensely lonely. This is why I have joined this forum. In the hope that I can chat with persons who are also feeling very lonely.

Welcome to SoC, @Joan Trigg . If you are 85 years old, I'm sure you have some interesting stories to tell. I'd love to hear some of them. What is the first thing you remember from your childhood?
