More thoughts. This is about the political class of Baby Boomers, those in charge, not individuals. “Nothing in life is more liberating than to fight for a cause larger than yourself, something that encompasses you but is not defined by your existence alone.” ― John McCain “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” ― John F. Kennedy My take? I think many of the Baby Boomers missed out on the opportunity to experience and learn such concepts, unlike their parents and grandparents. Maybe their parents neglected to teach them. Or maybe too many Boomers who did, became frustrated, and gave up too soon. Many now seem to hold such thoughts in contempt, like a weakness to be ridiculed. How the Baby Boomers - Not Millenials - Screwed America — Bruce Gibney The Baby Boomers became a majority of the electorate about the time Ronald Reagan became president, and it was the boomers for the most part, who put him into office. This is when we got a political approach that favors free-market capitalism, deregulation, and reduction in government spending, that essentially guts the public sector and attempts to privatize everything. At that point the national ethos became basically the inverse of JFK’s. Most of our problems have not been addressed because that would require a sense of social obligation to our fellow citizens. The boomers seem to have no appreciation for social solidarity. ( Btw, neither McCain, Kennedy, nor Reagan, were Boomers. Gibney is Gen X.)
