I absolutely feel that any news network who knowingly reports fake news, should be immediately taken off the air!!
Well so be it... let them send out reporters and find real news like they used to in the old days instead of inventing it, or stealing it from instagram or FB.. ..if they feed fake news, particularly fake news that causes backlash which includes violence or war then the news editor should be criminally charged !!
It’s all done under the guise of the 1st amendment but isn’t the news a product just like a medication or a widget is? To me, the news is a money making product and not just a matter of some folks talking about the government or religion or some such which is what freedom of speech is primarily about. Now, as to the removal of erroneous news publications: Just as a faulty widget or a dangerous medication is taken off the shelves and the company producing those products finding themselves in court, money making companies which produce fake news should be held under the same statutes of accountability. But.....it won’t happen in my lifetime.
Indeed it would Holly! If only the Nielsen rating system were to include % of facts versus falsehoods, assumptions and sensationalism, then the possibility of commercial news broadcasting going legitimate might be something foreseeable.
Back to the OP, another point of view ... Ret. Adm William McCraven wrote an op-ed for the New York Times today, entitled Our Republic Is Under Attack From the President. . [You may have to subscribe to the NYT to read the full op-ed.] Admiral McRaven is a 37-year Navy SEAL veteran who orchestrated the mission that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. He is well-respected throughout the military and has been apolitical in the past. He was interviewed on CNN today. CLICK HERE for the interview.
