Well, as I've said, it's worked for me for 8 decades, sorry our govt hasn't been a friend of yours. But then maybe this current govt will make things better for some of you here. Thinking about this subject, the republicans have been trying for decades to get private corporations to run our lives, afterall the republican party is for the corporations. And yes they employ people and so does govt. Why not both as it's been for decades. Many companies hire and pay illegals low salaries to do a lot of dirty work and I don't know that govt can get away with that.
My concern is what might be coming if one of the many idealistic, socialistic democrats running against Trump is eventually in control. I am very pleased that I can afford my present mode & standard of living & not be dependent on social programs. I pay for my Medicare just like you Joy, and in addition have a Medicare supplement. My income, benefits, investments were planned for, arranged and accumulated mostly through Republican administrations. I dread the thought of ever having to be a MEDICAID recipient.
Sad that some of these private companies don't open facilities to get homeless off the streets, which include many vets. A major one comes to mind here in Calif that was closed when I believe it was Reagan in office. Then I recall when a cousin back in PA was being put out of a mental institution as it was closing at that time. That was probably back in the early 80's or earlier.

Obviously someone has a problem differentiating between government paying for programs and taxpayers who pay the government to pay for them. Corporations pay their employees. Taxpayers pay for all government program and the employees who administer them. Ergo, the more government programs you use, we.\, the taxpayer pays for you to enjoy them.
The government does not have money but has your money. If people think the government should pay for something that mean you pay. The leaders of socialism/communism governments are millionaires/billionaires the followers are poor/very poor.
