His father was one of the founders of the Worlds Oldest Rodeo that took place July 4, 1888. That is all I will tell you.
@Cody Fousnaugh Thanks, I understand now. I'm not sure there is a place where many wear a cowboy hat. Last spring I visited a friend in Pendleton, a town that is about as "cowboy" as you can get and very few wore cowboy hats. I was glad to find the old bootmaker was still there and could put new heels on my expensive booties. I sat in my socks while he heeled them. I gave away my hat creased in my family tradition to a distant cousin many years ago. If you have ever seen the movie Lonesome Dove, the hat "Gus" Robert Duvall wears was patterned after my great uncles way of creasing a hat. Here is a place that makes the best hats. I ran across it many years ago visiting Calgary. They knew some of my distant cousins that rodeo in Calgary. https://thelastbestwest.com/the-last-best-west/western-store/
I gave you enough of a hint if you wanted to do some research. Also this thread is about Cody and let's not get off the trail here.
You're absolutely right it is about Cody..I nearly forgot that with all your long posts about yourself!!
Cheyenne is 59 miles north of Loveland. Cheyenne is more of a western "cowboy" culture and Loveland is more of a young people college hipster culture. Very different towns and cultures as Cody has said before.
Here in the western USA it is called sharing. It is something very common in the "cowboy" culture from Mexico to Canada. In the old west, cow people would sing, recite poetry, and talk about themselves and experiences rather than gossip about others. It is a lot like the old oral tradition found in the Gitano culture of Jerez and Sevilla.
\ I don't know what year this is, but here's a photo from the parade in Prescott. Faye's great-uncle could be waving to us from the street...….
Now let's get back to helping Cody find that place where he can wear his cowboy hat and not feel like a tourist. @Cody Fousnaugh are you looking for a place with a certain climate? What size of town?
@Faye, two weekends ago we spent a Friday and Saturday in Cheyenne and believe me, the ONLY time Cheyenne is western "cowboy" is during Cheyenne Frontier Days. Many folks who work in Cheyenne will tell anyone that. During our two days there, we only seen one man, an older Senior, wearing a cowboy hat. I sure wouldn't call that a western type city. As I've already stated, "I wore my felt cowboy hat into Cheyenne's Frontier Mall and got a number of odd looks, because, other than during the week or so of Cheyenne Frontier Days, nobody dresses at all western there." The inner part of Ft Collins is young people hipster, much more than here, due to the University there. Here in Loveland, there is a Cowboy Church, which is pretty cool, a rather large indoor rodeo arena (part of the Budweiser Events Center) and, even though it isn't common to wear a cowboy hat here, it is accepted. But, in ways, Loveland reminds us of Los Angeles or even Denver due to how many people here look. A lot of old/older Seniors here discuss how Loveland has change and how much they don't like it, but the discussions always stay among themselves. Its going to be "interesting" to say the least, when my wife wears here felt cowboy hat to Cowboy Church this coming Saturday. Not a single woman, young or old, was wearing a cowboy hat when we were there this past Saturday evening. She told me "I'd like to start a trend, but I seriously don't think that will happen. But, who knows. She loves wearing either her straw or felt cowboy hat (depending on the season). Wears one to every rodeo we go to or country-western nightclub we stop by. As far as helping us, Faye, with all due respect, we don't need the help. Really. We will find someplace, but it WILL be our last move. Being that is pretty much a must that we live in an apartment, apartment complexes are only found in bigger cities, not small towns. We can't afford to buy a home anywhere and couldn't get a bank loan as well. Just don't have the income.
@Cody Fousnaugh I understand and yes in time I will be seeking a more senior oriented community and hope to find a small duplex as it is all I can afford. Don't know if I could do the condo thing. Sorry to hear Cheyenne has lost its western culture. Hopefully it hasn't become like Boulder. One of my friends goes to a small town cowboy church and they all wear cowboy hats, but hang them on the antlers in the entry way. Some of the ladies didn't like messing up their hair, so they just held their hat in hand as they entered, hung them up, and after service would don them for the potluck lunch they have every Sunday. Years ago it was located where they could ride horses to service and a corral and saddle shed was available. The old guy that owned it died, so they had to move to a place with an asphalt lot, so now mostly 4 wheel drive pickups. I think your wife has a great idea. Start a new trend and it might just catch on.
Anyone who wore a hat, be it a baseball cap or cowboy hat, it was left on during the church service. No hat racks available. Even the Pastor left his felt cowboy hat on during the entire time he was at the church. However, all hats came off during any prayer. Funny, Faye, but I did ask a 40'ish lady at a nightclub wife and I went to, "so, where is your cowboy hat?" She told wife and I that she use to wear one, but men kept knocking it off when she danced with them. A Texas-Swing song can do that, however, my wife's hat never came off when we done that dance. My wife wears a baseball cap quite often. Her ex-husband thought it made her too "manly" looking, so she didn't wear one then. I happen to love it and she loves that. Heck, at our wedding, I wore my black felt cowboy hat, Wrangler jeans and my Ariat Lace-Up Boots. She had on a very nice looking western bridal dress that she borrowed from her niece. Her niece had a western wedding before we met. But, her niece and husband had nothing to do with rodeo, just western dancing. At our Wedding Reception, I had one of my Classic ropes (from Team Roping) and roped my new wife. I got a standing ovation for doing that. For our Honeymoon, we went to the Wrangler Winter Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas that was held in June after our March wedding. Only as fans, not a contestant. I was a descent "header"/Team Roper, but definitely not that good. LOL
@Cody Fousnaugh I truly hope you and your wife will find the " HAPPY PLACE " you are searching for to spend the rest of your years. No matter how much advice and suggestions you receive from others as to where to live, i'm sure you will know the right feeling when you find the " Right Place " for you and your wife, that will make you both happy...... Will have to get a snowball fight in, when we get some good snowball snow happens. .
@Cody Fousnaugh , what exactly is a ''western wedding dress''.. I genuinely don't know.. what does it look like?.. I am trying hard to visualise a version of Calamity Jane in a bridal outfit..with cowboy boots..
