The problem with using a non-stick pan to caramelize sugar is that after starting to turn into its liquid form, it isn’t allowed to nucleate on the surface and will get much hotter (and burn) than it would otherwise which is why I do not use non-stick in a professional kitchen especially when I’m making candy. Burnt sugar will bind to most non-stick surfaces and if ya try to get it off the hard way, it will pull the surface off of the pan. Now, as far as cleaning it afterwards, instead of scrubbing, I usually deglaze any type of pan with a little water until whatever is stuck to the surface comes loose.
Thanks Bobby. That is good to know. I carefully cleaned off the black stuff, but it didn't help. Maybe I'll give the pan one more try now. It's only $9.
If you're in no hurry you might find an old one at an estate sale for cheap. When I closed up the old homestead I ended up junking my mother's since hardly no one does sewing anymore.
Well, since I am an Atheist I don't buy a present for myself...but I do buy one for my birthday...so, yesterday I bought a lovely "old pink" sweater.
I usually buy myself a birthday present and a Christmas gift, just not always exactly on the specific day, and not always anything major. The new coffee maker and related stuff (grinder, scale, etc) I just got will be my Christmas gift to me this year.
I don't refer to it as a Christmas gift but while shopping for others, I do come across things that I want for myself.
I wanted to buy a "better umbrella" for the longest........today, a friend gave me one as birthday present; I am as happy as a child with a toy.
I don't buy myself a Christmas gift in particular, but I pretty much buy things I want "whenever." At this stage of life I don't have a lot of wants other than the occasional gadget or a new handbag.
