This is it in a nutshell Beth ………. The Queen, by convention, is not involved in the day-to-day business of the Australian Government, but she continues to play important ceremonial and symbolic roles. @Beth Gallagher
No Patsy Queen Liz has no powers but her representative does. Recall 1975 the sacking of Gough Whitlam by then GG John Kerr. That is a person holding a colonial post removing a popularly-elected leader from office. To my knowledge the Australian Constitution remains as it did then so the same thing could happen again. Tho I think these days the Australian people would tear down Canberra first. @Patsy Faye Do the Aussies and Canadians have to pay to support the Royals? I dont believe Australia does @Beth Gallagher but not certain. I do wish tho that they'd pay their own way when a member of the RF comes to our shores as the Australian taxpayer foots the bill for that..
It is the same here, no powers - her thoughts on things are respected but the decisions lie with Government And - no tax is paid or any payment is made to support her - we do that
@Craig Wilson - don't know anything about the situation with Whitlam but if the 'people' were unhappy then they should make that clear and if you do get the vote to opt out, then I'm sure that will happen
@Beth Gallagher - meant to add that the Queen brings in a lot of tourism so she pays for herself really
