You mentioned cantaloupe and I recalled having that as a kid...either 1/2 or 1/4 of one using the fruit as a bowl. I don't think I ever did that as an adult...but I do like salt on it. Same with watermelon.
Cantalope season is April thru November. Yea! As a kid would only eat watermelon. Luckily tatse buds change as we mature Correction..guess it depends on where you live for in season fruits and melons.
It's funny how international trade has pretty much eradicated seasons for fruits and veggies, except for a few: peaches, corn on the cob, melons, perhaps some others. Or maybe it's modern storage techniques (warehouses full of gases) that has done this. Or perhaps both. And I agree regarding taste buds.
I had success with 'lopes as well as tomatoes and sweet corn. Burpee seeds. Other seeds were disappointing. Other garden items, no success, regardless of seed brand. So I grew only the three items above for years, but eventually the tomatoes developed a wilt, perhaps verticillium or fusarium, despite practicing strict crop rotation. That ended veggie gardening for me.
