A well-known brand of hot dogs when we opened the package the dogs were covered in a slime or mucus. We decided not to take a chance and dump them.
Has anybody had a similar problem?
This is what I found online about it.
"The slime is bacteria/molds/fungi that have colonized the meat. It is NOT good to eat. You could cook it and kill off any living organisms, however, those same organisms leave behind toxic chemicals as a part of their consuming the meat."

I've had issues with fresh meats & seafood (as I guess everyone else here has), especially from this one independent grocery store whose standards were as low as their prices, but not something processed and chock-full of preservatives like hot dogs. I would have thought that nothing could live on a tube of nitrates.

There is one fairly large grocery store by me who's Refrigeration is just terrible. I stopped buying frozen foods from the store, you can see where the ice cream and ices have melted and refrozen. The orange juice is no better, but that may be because of handling, I've seen them leave boxes of OJ on a dolly just sitting there the whole time I shop. I've Been Told by someone I know who works there that they run out of room in there walk-in refrigerators in the back so to leave refrigerated items out on the floor for hours.

I remember several years back when they caught several grocery stores bathing their fish and meat in a bleach solution when it got slimy. Don't remember if it was local or nationwide now.

That's disgusting, and downright homicidal. I've heard of a small Stop & Rob here where the owner would get a container of alcohol and remove the old Expiry Dates from canned food.

That small grocery store I shopped at would get deals every once in a while. I lived just a mile from their so the food was never sitting in my car very long. I purchased shrimp and opened them up as soon as I got home. They smelled of ammonia...and I mean a strong gagging smell, not just an odor. I would take them back for a refund, and they kept a manual log sheet for returns. I was entry #35 of "Shrimp/Smells Like Ammonia." But for all the food I purchased there and elsewhere over my decades of cooking, I've never had a string of overtly negligent experiences.

I only buy one brand of hot dogs from Sheboygan. Wisconsin has a lot of sausage producers. The cheapest ones gag me. Processed meat is carcinogenic. But sometimes I just want one.
Even vacuum packed ham can be iridescent green on occassion here.
One cow lasts two years in my freezer. And we have rabbit, chicken and veggies home grown. I think I should wean myself totally off store bought food.
But it is sooooooo easy to eat from the store. I return the questionable stuff. bleached or hamburger brown on the inside...

Do not eat Hot Dogs. Regardless, when in doubt, dump it.

I have 3 eggs left in a carton dated Aug 7. Would you dare eat them this week? If I serve them to anyone besides the raccoons under my deck, will I be charged with murder?

That's usually a "sell by" or "best by" date and they will be safe to eat many days afterward.

Put them in a bowl of water. If they float, don't eat them. If the sink, they are OK to eat.
