I met a woman here who got scammed out of $13,000 because her "granddaughter" had "been arrested out of state." The imposter calls, is "in jail" and in tears, has a limited time on the phone, "the police will call with instructions." Then the "cops" call with instructions and the admonishment to "not speak of this to anyone." Not long afterwards, someone tried the same thing with her regarding her grandson. She told them to call back, then she called her grandson who was at home and doing well. The scammers called back, she told them "My grandson is at home, not in jail." The scammers actually yelled at her for calling someone and talking about it!!!!
In normal times I tend to carry 50-100 in cash, and used to prefer leaving cash tips at restaurants. But since the pandemic, I'm about 95% cashless, even though I hate using my card for anything less than $20. One of these days I'll learn how to use Apple Pay on my phone to buy a burger.
