My grandmother made mincemeat pie with venison (deer meat). She owned a hunting lodge in upstate NY and visited us in Pennsylvania when she made it for us. I was very young but clearly remember that I didn't like it. I was probably expecting pie. Venison is an odd taste anyway. She made the best apple pie, berry pie, and fudge though. She did all the cooking for the hunters there.
The only mincemeat pie I had was the fruit and berry kind. My granny's pie crust was deeeelicious. She probably used lard back then. It was just so flakey and good. Maybe that's why I'm fat today. Lol.
