My wife drives for a non-profit company that offers various services to people in need of various issues, including transportation. She drives people to dialysis centers, clinics, and doctor's offices, as well as to the grocery store, child-care visits, and so on. Most of her transports are scheduled ahead of time so, while there are sometimes surprises, she usually knows who she will be taking where, and when, the night before her working days. Like Uber and Lyft, they have a mobile app that can be used. Rather than being paid a salary or per-call payments, she is paid per mile. It's not reportable as income because it's considered compensation rather than a salary, but it's enough to do more than make up for the gas and maintenance costs.

There are a couple of Uber drivers in my rural area that get great press on the Next Door forum. They often take people to Dulles International Airport (100 miles one way.) There was one N.D. forum user who was of a party of 4 landing in Dulles from Europe and wanted advice on the final 100 mile leg of their journey to this area. I took a moment to look up busses and shuttle flight options to local airports, and THEN still getting to their final destination. It seems that the cost split 4 ways for Uber was the best choice (and way more door-to-door convenient) than the 4 of them each buying a ticket on a shuttle and then still having to find a ride from the nearest airport (plus mess with the hassle.)

So there are a couple of folks making decent money doing the 200 mile round trip airport Uber shuttle thing, which strikes me as about the most safe neighborhood/low-risk passenger type one could have.
