I don't remember the drug store engine blocks, but I remember when my dad had a car with a crank start. I was pretty young but, as I remember it, there was a push-button starter that would sometimes work. Otherwise, he would use the crank start, which looked awfully dangerous. I think there was supposed to be some kind of clutch or something that would keep the crank from spinning around once it started but it looked like he had to quickly remove it or it would spin around on him. I don't know. There was a lot that I didn't understand about cars then. I don't know what kind of a car it was, but it also had rumble seats, facing backward. If there were seat belts, I didn't know about them. We had to hang on tight while riding in the rumble seats.

McCown Drugs in Torrance, California had the engine blocks on stands in the front section of the store.
