Could we please have the Edit Option available for 24 hours after creating a post?

    Thanks,
    Hal

I had increased it to two hours. I just upped it to four hours, and am still thinking about the longer options. My fear is that someone will get angry about something and edit out a whole day's worth of posts, leaving any replies orphaned.

Another forum I once ran was ruined that way. I was allowing those who had been there a long time, and with the most posts, to edit their posts at any time, and someone spent the night editing out everything she had posted over a four-year period. She wasn't even angry - she just wanted to erase herself from the Internet, although she was using a handle, and ruined the forum in the process. I shut it down, as she had been one of my most prolific posters, and nothing made any sense anymore.

    Hello,

I was scanning my posts on the Model Railroad Forum this morning, and found one that needed a slight correction.

It was dated 8-28-2018, and the edit option was still open, allowing me to correct the post!

Yes, even after 9 months, I was still able to edit my post!

I would like to see this Forum maintain its edit option for at least a week.

    Thank you,
    Hal

This forum was actually kept that way for a long time, but some people started writing posts and then deleting them after they had responses, making the whole thread confusing, so the editing time was changed, @Hal Pollner . However, either Ken or myself would always be able to make an edit for you if you needed that here.
Part of what i do, is look at thread titles, and fix spelling or other errors when i see them.
Because of SEO, and as a courtesy to other readers, all threads are supposed to have an explanatory title of what the thread is about, so when I find a thread that does not explain that, then I also re-title the thread so that it does comply.

So you won't grant me the courtesy of maintaining the edit option for 24 hours?

Then I hereby resign from the Forum.

It's set for four hours. I've tried raising it but that didn't work out. I'm sorry to lose you, and hope you change your mind at some point.

The edit option only works for a certain amount of time, and there is a button for editing at the bottom of the post once you have posted it.
If you are starting a thread, and need to edit the title, then look in the bar where the title is at, and on the right side , you will see the “thread tools” option.
Once you click that you can edit the title.

If it is past the time where you can do that, either Ken or I will be happy to help you with it, just send a message. (If we notice that there is an error in the title, we will just fix it, or if the title doesn’t really say what the thread is about, then we may even change the title.)
When writing a title for a thread, the first letter in each word is automatically capitalized, but if you are trying to write something like “US” , it will come out looking like “Us” unless you leave a space between the U and the S.
Hope this helps, and if you still have questions, just add them here, and we will all do our best to explain how things work.

@James November, I've combined your thread with an earlier one that explains some of this stuff in more detail. I wish I could allow people to edit or delete their posts whenever they wanted to but it just doesn't work well that way. As I mentioned above, on another forum I once had someone spend the night deleting everything she had posed over a four-year period and, since she had been one of our most prolific members, the forum was ruined. None of the threads made any sense anymore. On the other end of the problem scale, if you reply to something that someone else has said in a thread, then they go in and change what they had said, your post might no longer make any sense. Some people do that for fun, while others realize that they couldn't support what they had said, so they go about erasing history. That puts a stop to meaningful conversation.
