The quotes by Christiana Figueres were said at the Paris Climate talks and that website you linked took the quotes and wrote a contradictory article around them. That website is a spin doctor website (also known as fake news procreator). I tell my students, before turning in a paper with a claim that leaves them open to debate, make sure it is true because your opponent will research and blow holes in your theory before you can sit back down. https://www.unric.org/en/latest-un-...he-world-economy-is-transformed-intentionally
There is a difference between global warming and climate change. Global warming happens naturally--it is one of the causes of the extinction of the dinosaurs. It happens every thousand or so years (I think it is 2000) when the poles shift. Climate change is man-made. It happens when man does things that impact the environment and accelerate global warming. Global warming will happen, there is no stopping it, but actions can speed it up. The actions have been going on since the first industrial revolution when Britain (not the UK) realized cutting all the trees down for fuel left them exposed to bad weather (you have to admit that is funny).
'Doomsday Clock' remains at 2 minutes to midnight. Can we save our planet? We have to.. it is the only one we have.. for now anyway.
They must charge the Doomsday Clock during Democrat administrations, kind of like the antiwar protesters, who go on vacation during Democrat administrations. It's just political propaganda.
These major threats — nuclear weapons and climate change I do not see nuclear weapons as "politcal propaganda" They are real. There are stockpiles of them..and just one detonated will start the beginning of the end of civilisation.
There are major threats all around us all the time....with or without a clock. Obsessing over them is a sure way to ulcers or a heart attack. This is a senior forum. Our best and most productive years are probably over anyway, so why not peacefully enjoy the time we have left?
No. I think that if there is anything that we can do to prevent a nuclear holocaust, we should do it. For those who will come behind us. But what can one person do?
There isn't even anything the whole western hemisphere can do. If they could, North Korea wouldn't have war toys beyond their mental capability to use prudence. Once a country no longer possesses the appreciation of each and every human life. there is no stopping the suffering they can inflict.
As far as I am aware, we haven't built any new nuclear weapons in the past three years but the only time we hear about the Doomsday Clock is when we have a Republican president. They weren't a threat during eight years of Obama. I hadn't read it anywhere, but I have noticed that the UCS only drags their dumb-ass clock out for the press when there is a Republican in office here. But I can see that I'm not alone in my observations that the Union of Concerned Scientists should hold the name of Union of Concerned Liberal/Progressive Scientists. -- Capital Research Center Of course, I am concerned about nuclear bombs, and even nuclear energy in general, just as I am about the destruction to the planet's environment, but the activist groups for these causes are purely interested in politicizing them to further a liberal/progressive agenda that would do nothing about the problems that they hold out. Their agenda isn't about any of that stuff. It's all about power, and I'm not talking about nuclear power.
But, @Ken Anderson , they are still there. They are still a threat no matter who is president or which party is in control.
Sure they are, but the Union of Concerned Scientists is only interested in pushing a liberal/progressive agenda. Just like the antiwar people, they don't care when Democrats or socialist governments do it. We heard from the Doomsday Clockists for only one reason: Trump is undergoing an impeachment trial that doesn't seem to be going well for the Democrats and the upcoming election. I know that might sound like two reasons, but not when you realize that the impeachment is nothing more than part of the Democrat 2020 campaign.
Nuclear weapons are not going anywhere in our time. Actually, having them more or less keeps us from annihilating one another due to the fact that we are well aware of the outcome if any are unleashed. Mutual destruction is not an option for anyone.
I see the nuclear deterrent as just that. Leaders happily send troops to their death but none of them will push the suicide button. My one fear is the technology falling into the hands of the suicide brigade.
