Precisely @Shirley Martin. Yes they may be a deterrent but they are nevertheless a dangerous one. Without any nukes perhaps the word war will cease to exist. As long as nukes remain we are in a constant cold war. I also agree that it only takes one nutter to start the big show.. and we have a coupla at present that already have a finger poised over the button. De-nuke and these isolated meglomanics cease to exist.
I don't think we will ever get rid of them. We could never trust the others to completely get rid of theirs and I'm sure they feel the same way about us. Whoever held back one would be in control. I think you are mistaken about war ceasing to exist. As long as humans exist, war will exist. It has ever been thus.
Craig, do you have any idea what it takes to launch an IBM with a nuclear warhead? Or what it takes to activate any nuclear device? It is much more complicated than merely pushing a button. Relax. This is not the movie, "On The Beach."
If a nuclear device is ever unleashed it will probably happen accidentally rather than intentionally. Rational people just won't do it. On the other hand those religious fanatics willing to die for Allah are a totally different matter. Nuclear proliferation is a serious matter. This doomsday matter to me comes off as just another Y2K type of thing.
I think that part of the reason that global warming has become such an accepted household term is because it is promoted so hard by the media, and especially by CNN, which is one of the main television channels that people see everywhere. Even when they have to be totally deceptive about things, they will find a way to do it, just to make it seem like what they are saying is really happening. Look at this example from Anderson Cooper (Vanderbilt) standing in the ditch just to make it look like the flooding is worse than it actually was.
