Sounds like me. I love top-water lures (mainly bass), but will use other jigs as well; otherwise, you're not fishing. You're just waiting.

Lately we have seen much topwater activity but small fish so go to baits heavier to sink faster and get below them usually that works well it did 2 weeks ago, I never bass fish anymore at all just hybrids and stripers...

We base a good trip on 100 minimum per boat we have broken 250 many times and 300 a few. Under 100 a very slow day for us. I will not even post our record trip as most would not believe it. We fish all year long every week.

I wish I could join you. I used to fish quite a bit. It's been a while.

The same goes for shooting. For a while I was hitting the range at NRA HQ at least twice a week. Then it got too crowded to be fun anymore.

Shooting in Raton NM? I shot several 1000 yds matches there some years back also, love the climate, then we stayed an extra day watching a "Mountain Man" competition, whish was great.

I think you may be referring to the NRA's Whittington Center. I hear it's nice, but I've never been there. This was in Fairfax VA in the basement of their headquarters. The NRA has a great indoor range there. 15 lanes with programmable target retrieval systems. You can have the target approach you and turn different directions for tactical practice, or just put it out there to shoot. You meet some nice folks there. Sometimes we'll trade guns so we get to try out different stuff before buying.

I have shot in New Mexico, outside of Albuquerque (Rio Rancho.) I spent a week camping with friends at Navajo Lake on the Colorado border. I had one day left when we got back to their place, and he offered to take me coyote hunting. But it was a couple of hours away, and we had already spent a lot of time on the road in their RV, so we just went out plinking in the desert.

Most of my time is spent outside and fishing and shooting takes most of it up 2-3 days a week all year long, I have done this all my life and really alot in the last 10-15 years, I reload all and cast bullets also, I love shooting matches and attend them monthly locally my traveling to them days are over for the most part, (cost).
