    New story....

She heard the quiet rustle of the fallen leaves as he walked slowly up the path. Away from her. She knew that this time he was leaving for good. She watched the water swirl around the rocks in the babbling stream. One lone tear ran slowly down her cheek. As her eyes misted over, she remembered back to that early spring day that she first saw him.

She was sitting on her favorite rock by the stream. The dappled sun through the leaves was warm to her skin but the water still had ice around the edges. He came from around the bend just upstream. He stopped and flicked his trout fly expertly into the swirl below a big rock. Nothing. He flicked it again.
She sat still, watching him. But she must have made a small movement. He looked quickly in her direction. When he did, his foot slipped on the pebbles. He fell into the icy water, kersplash! He came up sputtering and shaking his head. It was so funny, she had to laugh at him.
“What the hell are you laughing at?” he yelled. “You! You look so funny!,” she replied. He looked down at himself and laughed, too.
“You better rescue your hat,” she told him. It was floating lazily down the stream. He splashed after it and got it. Then he climbed up onto the bank near her. He was shivering by then. “Come on up to the house and dry off before you catch pneumonia,” she said.
