My house is total electric, but we have a small free standing kerosine heater in case of emergencies. If we have a big ice storm, the power will sometimes go out. We have a generator but it's a lot of trouble to use. If the power is only going to be out for a few hours, it's less trouble to use the oil heater. Look at this........ Last Thursday night our heat pump quit working. Friday morning, we called a heat and air repair business. They sent a man out. He looked at the pump. Said the capacitor was blown. He had to go back to town and get one. I wondered why he didn't have one with him. I think a blown capacitor is probably one of the most common problems with a heat pump. They are about the size of a pack of cigarettes. My son, the plumber, always has the smaller parts that are commonly needed on his work van. So, he comes back, installs the capacitor. He comes back in the house and says we have to have a new unit installed. It has a freon leak that he didn't see before. Prive $7200. There were several things that he said and did that raised my little spidey senses. Why didn't he have a capacitor with him? Why didn't he see the leak the first time he looked? I told him to call my son and talk with him. Son says, "Let me talk to my brother. I'll call you back." They decided to get another opinion. My older son has a friend who works for a heat and air business. He got him to come out Saturday on his day off and take a look at it. He said it had a tiny leak in a pipe. He put some freon in it and said he will come back in a few days when the weather is a little warmer and fix the leak. It's working fine now.
An elderly friend in the city has just paid a repair man to “ fix” her back screen door ..the bit up the top of the door that closes the door slowly ….cost her $750.00 and he forgot to put the screws in the end that attaches to the door frame It’s shameful how the older generation are getting ripped off by dishonest ..Con artists I phoned her yesterday for her birthday …, and other couple we dance with ( they run 2 seperate dances) was there for her birthday and fixing the door for her I used to like swapping a dance with Beryls .hubby cause I could look him in the eye …unlike hubs who’s a foot taller than me . Beryl turned 94 yesterday he hubby died some time ago
I know exactly what you mean by us seniors getting ripper off by the younger set.. Up here it isn't that bad, but still it isn't perfect.. Living in a small village most workers are quite honest otherwise the word gets out pretty fast and he would be out of business..
We had a similar thing happen when hubs broke his hip / had a replacement and it was ….27th Jan 2021 in summer Our rooftop evaporate ducted cooler broke down , and as hubs was in not able to fix it, we called in a repair man and he quoted us $4.000 to replace the cooler …..( he said the motor was burned out ) luckily it was a very cool summer and we didn’t need it ( we’ve got ceiling fans as well ) when hubs was better he fixed the cooler for $3.00 ..yes a $3.00 bearing in the fan part of the cooler
Thank you @Shirley Martin It’s today cause it’s the 3 rd already …..yeh I know you are behind us in time . Much appreciated …thanks
Its been very quiet up here lately.. Not much going on in our lives other than existing and keeping well..
All we can do is look after our heath and wellbeing …. Steve and we all eat well …… .I made a Eggplant lasagna yesterday it made a big dish enough for 8 meals and everything except the meat and a sprinkle of cheese …was out of my garden And altho we all have busy times it’s good to have our little group sharing and caring about each other … Do you still garden Steve? ,you used to grow quite a bit of your own veggies . it’s stinking hot here 107f so I picked about 10 kg of butternut pumpkins this morning to stop them “ cooking “ in the sun
Kate... Yes I still have a vegetable garden however lately I have cut down on the plants as it is way too much for me to handle.. I grow mainly what we need on a minimum basis.. Tomatoes especially the yellow grape ones, zucchini, carrots, parsnips, and onions... These are my main veggies and I also have some different ones like peppers, peas, and who knows what else.... Now, obviously it is in the middle of winter up here.. Stinking hot there, and nippy here at -35c... We have way over 4 feet of snow on the ground..I have a wagon wheel ornament in the back yard that is 48 inches tall and it is completely berried in snow.... Enjoy your heat and I will enjoy my cooler weather.. Just take care of yourself and hubby..
