When I was dragged to church every Sunday, through the late 1940's and most of the '50's, everyone was reasonably well dressed. Occasionally, at an early service, you might see a few dressed in work clothes. What I liked seeing was the women, dressed in nice dresses and wearing hats. A pretty rare sight these days.
Last night, when we were at our local mall, I noticed a heavy-set lady with her hand down inside her pants elastic waistband and a man behind her hugging her. Some folks don't care at all who sees them doing this stuff. I thought, "go to the restroom if you want to do that!" I hurried my wife by the couple!
of course that's absolute baloney as i'm sure you already know Ike.... I've lived and worked in Germany and never ever seen anyone in nightwear outside of their homes.
Here, although the church going congregation is much smaller than the USA....everyone still gets dressed up for church...thank goodness because I still love to see everyone dressed up , as we always were on Sundays.. I live in a very small market town where the non -white population is less than 1%....so I don't get to see the Baptist Black population attending churches here..but the city of London is just 20 miles from here with a very large non-white church going population, and whenever I'm in the city, I take great delight in watching the ladies going to church in glorious pastel coloured dresses, and the elder ladies in very smart outfits...and the men all suited and booted... Locally here in my little village, the church going population is almost entirely elderly, , but they still dress up ... That said...I understand totally what you mean about dressing up in the church @Cody Fousnaugh , and I agree...and as I said previously, it's a joy to behold....however if it came right down to choice...either dress up and go worship in church or go casually in shorts ( btw thongs here mean womens' underwear)...I think you might mean what we call flip flops ( open toed sandals)... I'd prefer to know that God wouldn't mind what the heck they were wearing as long as they were clean when they got there ....
Had to laugh Holly, if I said we had an Irish family next door and the wife always walked around in her undies, I wouldn't mean 'all of Ireland' Just like my quip above about never going to Germany - I didn't mean it, not that I can go, so I won't Anyway, plenty of women do walk about in their undies, especially in the garden, only they call them bikinis .............
Yeah @Holly Saunders but that is why the lady moved to America the land of the free...so she could be free to be herself and walk around in her back yard in her bra and panties!
When we lived in north Idaho, we were along ways off of the little county road, and in the trees; so invisible from the road. In the summertime, both Bobby and I would often "get our vitamin D" by dressing in just a swimsuit, or even just underwear; but we were where no one could see us, and we could put on more clothes if a car happened to come up the driveway (which was rare). Most of the people we see in Walmart do not look like the pictures that get posted online; although some do wear those flannel PJ bottoms when shopping. I think that this has almost become acceptable as public clothing, at least here it has, and it is not necessarily going to mean that the person slept in these clothes all night and then went shopping in them, but just that this is how they decided to dress for the day. I think that I have probably actually driven my kids to school in pajamas, because when we woke up so late that they missed the bus, we had to hurry to rush them off to school on time. This was not a habitual thing, just kind of emergency measures for us. I am also in favor of people actually getting dressed before going out in public, and even your own back yard when it is visible for other people to see you out there.
I never have either. Maybe they felt freer to do it after they came over here. I only know what I saw and heard. However, both my sons spent time in Germany when they were in the army. You probably wouldn't believe their stories either.
when I said outside Patsy, I meant in public, ..shopping malls etc... the privacy of your own home or back garden is a different thing..
Ike said she walked into the shop in her house robe, slippers and hair net - just the 'one' German though wouldn't make any difference what nationality she was - she did it
