You'll find some more in the Criterion "Three Reasons" series in their Youtube channel. For example, Wild Strawberries Babette's Feast - Pope Francis' favorite movie Children of Paradise Also, Cinema Paradiso - a great movie about growing up and movies
Bicycle Thieves The Scent of Green Papaya War and Peace - Bondarchuk's magnificent version; there is some violence because war is involved, but what dominates is actually drama on an epic scale (bonus: no CGI)
Modern Times Perfumed Nightmare by Kidlat Tahimik (Quiet Thunder) - any agenda's understated because it's wrapped around Lat Am-inspired magic realism Raise the Red Lantern La Strada
The 400 Blows The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner - a very good example of the "angry young men" works The Loved One - one of my favorite comedies Picnic at Hanging Rock
Some of the greatest humanist movies in the world: Tokyo Story Twenty-Four Eyes The Naked Island - a fascinating movie that also has only one line of dialogue L'avventura
Blowup - one of my favorite murder mysteries, with almost no violence, and is actually about something else Camouflage O Brother Where Art Thou - believe it or not, a funny reworking of Homer's Odyssey Billy Elliot
The Golden Coach The Age of Innocence This is How We are Now, How Were You Then? (Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?) - a fascinating play on Voltaire's Candide Here's a nice bonus: the movie is now offered for free, and with subtitles T-Bird and Me (T-Bird at Ako; "t-bird" is slang for lesbian) It's about a club dancer jailed for killing a rich man's son who tried to rape her, and a wealthy, top female lawyer who wants to defend the dancer to prove herself but secretly does so because she has doubts about her sexuality. In short, it's filled with multiple agendas that ironically cancel each other out, leading to an unexpected ending, and involves what is supposed to be banal melodrama but surprisingly leads to a plot and pacing that not only works but looks almost perfect.
I'm more into American cinema and English, I do have a problem with vision also don't watch movies with words typed in. I'm not a woman well-traveled so don't care for foreign films. The Great Waltz I liked but it was in English and about a man whose music I heard my whole life. I'm sure it would have been great to travel as you did when I was younger but never had the opportunity. Thanks Raif.
I t was a good movie. And I don't know who Kristy is, since I forgot most of the stars in the movie anyway..
Thanks for the suggestion but I can't see good enough to watch movies in foreign languages with CC. Plus I miss the movie reading the translation's into English.
