@Yvonne Smith , kale will last all winter here. I have picked it after everything else is cold hurt. It should last there, too. Aren't sweet potato leaves poisonous?
Sweet potatoes are totally different from regular potatoes, @Shirley Martin . Regular potatoes are part of the nightshade family, just like tomatoes, and the leaves from both are not edible (although the deer used to eat mine when I lived in Idaho). The sweet potato is actually related to the morning glory, and not a nightshade at all, and the leaves are not only edible, but have a plethora of vitamins and minerals in them, and can be eaten just like spinach. Since they happily grow during the hot summer weather, they make a good replacement for the cold-weather greens, like lettuce and spinach. My kale seems to come back each year, but I only have a few plants; so I thought if it went to seed, then I can start more for this fall, and we should have it up into the winter here as well, although probably not as long as you do. https://www.smartsupplementsguide.c...ato-leaves-for-skin-muscles-more-camote-tops/
This is one of my tubs with sweet potatoes and the atomic tomatoes planted in it. It is deep enough that we should get some sweet potatoes by this fall, and in the meantime, I am harvesting the greens a little at a time. I have several other containers planted with sweet potatoes as well, so I am hoping that we can have the greens this summer and a sweet potato harvest late this fall.
I looked up sweet potato leaves today and found some recipes. NC is sweet potato country yet I never knew we could eat the leaves. Did you know that squash blooms are also edible?
It’s mid winter here and I still managed to pick frilly lettuce leaves ( growing in a pot) that continue to grow to have with our pasta bake last night ….I blankly refuse to pay $12 for a iceberg lettuce All my salad was out of my garden which was a basic but nice lettuce / spring onion / a half shrivelled capsicum a tomato ( winter variety) and I added sliced avocado I bought
