I've never had them either, @Chrissy Cross. I suspect they are sort of rubbery? Like half cooked dry beans? Do they add salt?
The ones I tasted had been boiled in salted water. It was 7-8 years ago that I tried them, so I can’t exactly describe the taste, but probably mealy like a not quite cooked bean, and with a taste reminiscent of peanut butter, but not good like peanut butter. Probably (to be fair) , some of the people here who enjoy boiled peanuts ......... this means YOU, @Pam Sellers ........ should add their description of how they think boiled peanuts taste. I am sure that it will be a better sounding description than I was able to give everyone.
It has been a while, but I remember boiled peanuts as kinda soft and chewy. We also had shrimp boils. The shrimp boils were Gulf shrimp boiled whole and you shelled and ate as much of the shrimp as you wanted.
Boiled Peanuts ( the 'ed' is silent, you say Boil P-Nuts! ) are only made from 'Green Peanuts' ( they're not really green ) and only around a couple of months. When they are gone, I'll buy a bottle of RC Cola and a bag of Lance's salted peanuts and pour them in the bottle. Now that there, is Pure Heaven ! Best place to buy them is from a road side stand. If you are lucky enough, you might find this combo and then you're set!
