Well, it is hurting us poorer people-especially since the hubby is trying to retire next month. We do not have much so any loss is not good, but will ride it out .
The volatility in the markets creates an odd circumstance for me as a mutual fund investor. When the markets plunge and things look bleak I end up with more cash and more taxes to pay because the fund managers are busy selling stocks to preserve past gains. Try to take the long view. If you had a sound investment strategy before the market went down then you still have a sound investment strategy today. What happens to the stock market in one month or one year won't define what happens over the span of a twenty-year retirement. Good luck!
Isn't it a bit of a risky strategy if you still have to rely on the stockmarket as a retiree? I had heavily invested in stocks while I was working but then sold almost everything when retirement age came nearer because I didn't want to jeopardize my sleep at night.
@Thomas Stearn, I did a little of both. Jesse Livermore Quote: “I can’t sleep” answered the nervous one. “Why not?” asked the friend. “I am carrying so much cotton that I can’t sleep thinking about. It is wearing me out. What can I do?” “Sell down to the sleeping point”, answered the friend.
An investment-savvy sage once commented: "In a rising market, perhaps the best method of choosing the issue to buy is to throws a dart at the Industrials hung on the wall". It's all a guessing game, especially for the little guy. Frank
Unless you have cash stashed under your mattress. Stocks, bonds and all forms of using your money to gain more money is all on paper. Or losing as the case may be. Gain or loss is determined at the time you decide to convert what is on paper to cash. The only advice worth believing is to do what lets you sleep well.
Hey... Yesterday we had some rain, But all in all, I can't complain... Was it dusty on the Train? P.S...I love you. Hal
Dear Senior Investors: Last week I bought a 9-month CD for $40,654.48. The interest rate is lousy, but it's a secure short-term investment. When it matures in Jan. 2020, I'll re-invest it for $50,000. One must do Something... Harry
