I am making my second loaf of oatmeal breakfast bread, the first loaf was so good ! Last time I used apples and blueberries like the recipe said, but we had a ripe banana that needed to be used for something, so today I am making a banana oatmeal loaf. This really makes a great breakfast because it is like having a treat, while still having a nourishing bowl of oatmeal. I am adding chia seeds, flax meal, and a little psyllium, so it has an extra lot of healthy fiber.
I think I said somewhere here before we eat oatmeal every day. The brand we eat is Nature's Path Old Fashion Oats. We don't like Quaker Oats or any instant or microwave oats. By our taste palates, it tastes totally different than the Nature's Path Oats. I always add blueberries or some other fruit, but mostly we have blueberries. I add a tad of locally grown honey sometimes, but I don't need any sweetness on mine to eat it. My husband likes a bit of maple syrup or sugar on his. No milk on ours. Edited: I forgot, we have some chopped walnuts with our oats too.
I like the rolled oats and mostly eat Quaker, although I'm looking for a change. I'll try the Natures Path if I can find them next grocery trip.
I really like the Bob’s Red Mill oatmeal products also. I just ordered some of the thicker cut oatmeal from Bob’s , on Amazon. It is all organic and rolled extra thick. They use a stone grinding mill for grains that are processed with a mill. This comes with a 4 pack, and it was on sale , so I ordered two of them.
Thanks Yvonne between the two I'm sure either will be an improvement over Quaker. Quaker use to be a good product but I'm sure it isn't what it used to be by a long shot.
I also don't understand all the hoopla about steel cut oats. I like my oatmeal soft and thick enough to hold up to milk. If I want a chewy cereal I'll buy Grape Nuts.
I always ate grape nuts as a cold cereal; but I suppose that it would work as a hot cereal , too, @Jane Carlson . It is too crunchy for me to chew now, or I would still eat it in the summer as a cold cereal. I really like the hearty flavor of steel cut oats, and they are not mushy like plain oatmeal; but not too chewy for me to be able to eat them , and since I am cooking them with an apple and raisins, they need to cook longer . With regular oatmeal, it is done way before my apple is tender unless I get it chopped in fine little pieces. Now that I have tried the baked oatmeal, I think that might become my very favorite, because I can pick it up like a bran muffin and have it along with my morning coffee.
We are not fond of the fine Rolled oats we like the proper whole grain rather than the “sweepings off the floor stuff “ I cook ours on the stove top half water/ half milk ….not quite a full cup RO to 1 cup water …same amount of low fat milk. We have a very light sprinkle of raw ( brown) sugar / freshly grated nutmeg / and a 1/2 teaspoon of butter that’s put in plate before adding hot RO so it melts through the hot Porridge Not fond of any fruit either dried or fresh or nuts with our, just like plain bowl of old fashioned porridge.
Thick and hearty oatmeal, usually steel cut is my preference. I sometimes toss in a handful of granola, banana slices, raisins, and blueberries. Then drizzle a bit of honey over it, with a pat of butter. Just a half bowl is sufficient until dinner time for me.
I use blueberries, strawberry, etc when we have them. I usually freeze some. I like grapes, berrys frozen, kind of like pop cycles.
Yes, I've read that Grape Nuts is good as a hot cereal too. I think the instructions may even be on the back of the box, I'm not sure!
It amazes me how many different ways we all enjoy oatmeal! It made me think...can you imagine if we had no choice in food? Only one way to prepare chicken, one type of pizza, one kind of bread, one kind of cookie, only one vegetable, just one way of fixing a hamburger, etc....we'd have nothing to talk about! (I talk about food a lot! )
