There are some extraordinary Orthodox churches in Eastern Europe. St Petersburg has several, including the one that Terry has mentioned. There is also the fairytale-castle St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. The Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia is spectacular and St Sava's Cathedral in Belgrade is so vast that it hasn't finished being built yet, even after a hundred years. Kyiv has a fantastic array of gold onion-domed churches as well.

Another place I should give a mention to is Istanbul. Aya Sofia and the Blue Mosque are must-sees.

Aya Sofia (or Hagia Sophia) and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque):

It is incredible to think that Aya Sofia was built in just six years. This was in the 6th century. This is less time than it took to rebuild Wembley Stadium in London, some 15 centuries later!

@Helene Lawson, thank you for posting those wonderful photos. I've been to only one of them - Great Wall of China - so there are still 9 places to go. Next month we have a trip to Vietnam and friends say that it is just an hour away from Seam Reap, Cambodia where we can see the famous Angkor Wat, the temple inside the jungle. I am wishing to see some other places in your list and I know it is not impossible. Maybe in a few year's time that I can save enough to travel outside Asia then I can go to the US first.

I have not been to Cairo, but have visited the Valley of the Kings in Luxor. Of course, the most famous tomb there is Tutankhamen's, but Sod's Law decreed that it was closed for renovation when I was there.

It is not, in fact, that interesting ,in itself. Because he died so young, it is a small tomb and anything of interest has been moved out to the museum in Cairo. The Karnak Temple in Luxor is well wo

Dunno about the visiting thing. I worked in 17 countries and either worked in or made major stops in all 50 states. Of course, I could fudge the numbers a small bit by naming the separate islands in the Philippines and the Bahamas I've worked, but each bunch of islands are a country so I left it at that.
And, I do have some sympathy for @Frank Sanoica for his layover at Heathrow. I've had to do it a few times and each time I thought that perhaps my plane had crashed and I was in Hades. No fun, no fun at all for this normally patient gentleman.

Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland, Wales, Holland, France, Switzerland, Germany (when I was there it was East & West; stayed in both,) Italy.

I was the type of traveler who would set up a base for myself; would never stay less than a few months (or years!) so I could really know where I was and make friends. From the base I would travel extensively, coming "home" when my excursions were over.

No "If It's Tuesday It Must Be Belgium" travelling for me.

    I'd like to see @Terry Page 's list! :)

My husband traveled a lot but for business. His passport had to have pages added.

Can't think of too many places he hadn't been.
