The forum automatically turns links into a different color. When you highlight a phrase and "copy" it, the phrase is saved into memory. On a Mac, you can do that by highlighting the phrase, then clicking "Edit" and choosing "Copy," although I use the shortcut, which is Command-C on a Mac. I forget what it is on a PC, but the methods are similar.
I'm always on an iPad or iphone but that's neither here or there, so what you are saying is what I call "copy and paste"? I'll give it a try...never hyperlinked before. Thanks.
Yeah. The copy part of copy and paste. I don't think I have ever created a hyperlink on my iPhone but I'll try it sometime. I have done so with my Kindle Fire, but I'm going to do again now and refresh my memory. Okay, I am here on my Kindle Fire right now, and will link to the main page of the forum from the text that reads "main page." On a Kindle Fire (and I think an iPad would be similar), in order to highlight the text that you want to turn into a hyperlink, you touch the screen onto the first letter of the first word you want to highlighted, and hold it there until what are called "handles" pop up beneath the word. Then, if you want to use more than one word as a hyperlink, you would drag the right-side handle to the right, or the left-side handle to the left. Once you have highlighted the part you want to turn into a hyperlink, click the little icon above the posting area that looks like a link from a chain. A box will pop up, and you can add the hyperlink there. If you have copied the link into memory, you can paste it into the box. I'm thinking the process is similar on an iPhone but, given the small size of the screen, it might not be so easy. Then again, some of you are used to using an iPhone to access the forum, while I rarely use mine for that purpose. You will notice that the hyperlink is light blue, while the rest of the text is black.
It might be that it's too much of a problem on an iPhone. Of course, I think posting in the forum is too much of a problem on my iPhone. On the Kindle Fire, it's not too hard. I just needed to remember how to do it because I have only created a link on my Kindle Fire once or twice before. I use that to access the forum while my wife is driving sometimes, so I have the added problem of movement from a moving car. You know, women drivers and all that.
Ha ha, women are better drivers than men but I do understand the problems of trying to type on an iphone while in a moving car. I do it when my daughter is driving. So, the directions are the same for the ipad as they are for the PC? I wouldn't try it on my iphone, unless that's all I had for awhile for some reason. I would either just link the old fashioned way or not post something that requires a link.
Oh, I won't be yelling at anyone for not using text-linking. I just like to remind everyone that it does look much better and to encourage those who can to do so.
I copied the link, came back here, clicked on the chain link icon, pasted the URL into the place provided and hit "insert" and then hit post reply, it didn't work.
I have always just done the copy/paste thing, too, @Chrissy Page . I happen to not like links that I can't SEE what the actual link is taking me to; so when someone posts a link on here that is like @Ken Anderson wants us to do, and it just says "here" or some such thing instead of showing the whole link, I just never , ever even open that link to see what it is about. Therefore, I never post links that way either, and (except for youtube) have just decided that i would probably stop writing posts with links. But , since you asked me to see how to do this, I am trying it. I followed the instructions, and can get the hyperlink to copy that way, but not to be replaced with a word. I must be missing some little thing that replaces the link with the highlighted word; but thus far, i am not sure what it is that I didn't do right. I will keep trying and see if I can get it figured out, Chrissy. Maybe one of the others here who uses an iPad can tell us both how this works ?
You don't replace the hyperlink with a word. You type the word, highlight it, then, by clicking the link icon above, you turn the word into a hyperlink by pasting the URL into the space provided by clicking on the link icon.
First, type the word. Next, highlight the word. Click the link icon. Once you've clicked the link icon, the link box will pop up. Paste or type the URL into the link box, click the "Insert" button and your link is in place. Once you "Post Reply" it will be there, as below. Example
I think that's my problem, highlighting the word on my ipad. What do I choose? If I don't choose anything, it's not highlighted anymore.
In that screen shot, the word is highlighted. If you wanted to highlight words to the left or to the right, as well, you would drag the blue dots (handles), the right one to the right to include words to the right in highlighting, and the left to the left, etc. But as it is in that screenshot, if you were to click on the link icon (the one to the right of it is to unlink something that you had previously linked), the URL box would pop up and you could paste the link in it. When the word turns blue, it's highlighted. Some computers may use a different color perhaps, but the idea would be the same.
