Have eaten a lot of peaches, also the pears, and watermelons. Had half ham & cheese this evening. I'm really a dedicated sandwich guy.
My husband's potted plants and Norfolk pine are growing in his "garden" just fine this year. Come years are better than others....but this is a really good garden year over here.
No gardens allowed in apartment complexes, which is fine with us. Didn't have one at our house in Colorado and had a large backyard. Just not into dirt and hard labor. Drinking........well, we don't overdo, but do enjoy a good margarita weekly w/Mexican food. Have a few Bud Lights during the week and weekend and sometimes will enjoy a shot of 1800 Tequila or Fireball with the Bud's. We love having a Bud or two when boat is tied up to a dock and it's fairly warm outside. Do go to our local Farmer's Market for some fruit and vegie's. Peaches have to be somewhat soft, not hard enough to crack a wall (if thrown at one). We buy Blue Berries, Black and Red Raspberries, Strawberries, celery hearts, carrots, radishes, sweet corn (cob) and a sweet potato. We aren't vegetarians by any means, but do like vegies when watching an NFL game.
Best garden I ever had was in Tombstone, Arizona. No grass on anyone's yard, just dirt, well, not exactly dirt, it was caliche, similar to cement. I decided to start from scratch. Went to the dump and found a pile of rough, treated 2 X 6's that had been on the board walks downtown and had been replaced by new boards. Then I built a box 12" deep and 12 ft. long and 6 ft. wide. I found some fine loamy dirt in desert washes and cleaned out a friends corral of horse manure. I alternated a load of sand with a load of horse manure until the box was full. I made rows with a hoe, put drip tubes in each row then covered the whole thing with black plastic. Then I built a small fire and heated a short piece of 1-1/2" pipe and burned holes through the plastic at measured 9" intervals. I transplanted tomato plants across one end and sweet corn seeds in the length of the rows. Understand, I did all this labor in March before it got too hot then planted in April. After the corn was hip-high I trans-planted a few pumpkin in among the corn and let the vines sprawl across the vacant lot. I had the drip system hooked up to a timer so I could turn on the water after work and retreat to the house. It's too darn hot to do much outside in summer or maybe I was a wimp? In the early spring, I'd put up long stakes to support the tomatoes and they grew 8' high by end of summer loaded with tomatoes. I was giving away tomatoes to all comers by summer's end.
Sounds like you had a raised garden before they became popular. My son has several of them. He put mule manure in with his soil this year and had a bumper crop.
