I'm not a member, but they do have some interesting articles on their site, and occasionally, they will offer some nice prizes via sweepstakes/contests that I enter. I haven't won, but at least I know they're legitimate contests. I think the discounts were the same or similar to those offered by AAA, Sam's Club, and other such programs when I worked at the hotels.

"I just renewed our membership today."

I won't. Why? Because I learned AARP spends vast amounts of money on all efforts aimed at disarming Americans.

I hate AARP, have not been a member for years but they refuse to acknowldege that.
Several years ago called their main office to be removed from their mail list....but now they are back at it again. That is my rant for the day.

I also hate AARP. My wife joined last year because the AARP Medigap program was going to work the best for her, considering that she sees a lot of specialists, and I got an AARP card in the mail. I didn't join, and had no intention of joining AARP.

Cancelled my membership fifteen years ago, wrote aarp a letter, suggesting they did not have seniors interest in mind and to cancel my member ship? They did and I did not hear from them for a couple of years then I begin getting mail from them on a six months basis. I tear them up. I got the latest this week. I see no reason to being a member. Guess that's the way they operate, think some day you'll come back.

I belong to AARP mostly for the Hartford automobile insurance. An insurance agency I once belonged to tried to get me a cheaper rate from one of the insurance companies they carry and could not so I see a benefit there. The magazine and newsletter are nice to get and something to read. As for AAA, I recently joined. I have neighbors who called for help with flats, dead battery and keys left in the car and I got jealous, so I joined. Changing flats and the like are OK when you are young, but what the heck did I work and save for all those years? I'll pay AAA to do the dirty work.

I'm not anymore. I didn't really find any benefit from it as far as discounts. Now that I'm retired I still don't see any benefits of having it.

Nearly every place that offers an AARP discount will offer a senior discount of the same value, with or without the card. I am a member because my wife sees a lot of specialists and the AARP Medicare plan worked out to be the best for her, and I automatically became a member when she did. Otherwise, I wouldn't.

My husband joined and he likes reading the magazines. :D I don't pay much attention to it except to see how old some movie stars are.

Ditto on that. I hate when my money is used to support and champion things I do not agree with. They don't ask if its ok with me .. they just do whatever THEY want!

I thought about joining because they are giving away that really cool travel bag and all the bag would cost me is $16.95. :D
My husband, who was an avid gun collector and intensely republican, would literally roll in his grave if I were to join.
So, in respect, I'll pay a lot more money in a store for my own cool travel bag.

I can't understand why some organization like AARP, or some actor would take a political stand and risk alienating half of the population against them, when it's public support that makes their existence possible.
