@Lulu...thank you so very much for importing the Joan Baez version to this thread!

Rise up, rise up little Matty Groves,
As fast as ere you can,
In England it shall ne'er be said
    I slew a sleeping man!

@Holly, to be fair, I listened to the Fairport Convention version all the way through, and I have to admit their version is complete, as the Joan Baez version did not have Lord Arlen offering Matty Groves the best of his two swords, and it did not have Lord Arlen killing his wife with his sword and placing her body on top of Matty's.

However, whoever controlled the mixing console at the recording session was a real idiot, as the band's volume drowns out the vocalist to the point where she is almost unintelligible!

This is why Joan Baez's version is so pure by comparison.

Regardless of the disagreement, I'm glad you like Folk Music and especially that song!:)

Unfortunately Hal...it's a muddy old recording, recorded in Mono on multi track tape, so every time any recording was copied information would be lost , for example... copied down a generation during the mix , and it can't be improved now with Sandy, as she's long passed...

But yes indeed I'm a HUGE Folk ( particularly Celtic music ) fan....

    Yo Holly,
My 46 year old daughter Tania plays Fiddle and Mandolin in Celtic music groups in the Chicago area. She also plays Violin in Classical Orchestras and Chamber Music groups. She loves Celtic music! She also plays String Bass in her church group.

Her profession is tutoring English Literature and she's had 4 Poetry books published.

The last time she and her family visited us in California, I taught her to shoot at my home rifle range.
