The drivers let us ride on the back bumper and help ourselves to chunks of ice mixed with sawdust and dirt.

    How DID we survive childhood?

As kids, my brother spent Christmas vacation at my uncle's place in New Hampdhire. As luck would have it the next door farmer would take us in the back of his pickup truck every day to deliver milk and eggs around town.

Either I'm not that old, or we just didn't get that service in northeastern Indiana way back then.

It was a simpler time and life, or so it seemed, because the internet wasn't around to show us, daily, just how horrible a species we truly are. It was, in fact, a great testament, in looking back on it, now, that ignorance is (in fact) bliss!

Early 1950s in Baltimore Md. In the late 50s, the trucks were refrigerated.

You mean like in the movie A League Of Their Own, when the baseball scout asked the one sister, "doesn't that hurt them?" and she replied "doesn't seem to".
Yep, the old days of milk production.

    I disagree.

The internet and all media magnifies the outlayers.

If a significant number of us were that horrible, we would have killed ourselves off a long time ago, not have homicide rates of 4-5 per 100,000.

We had home milk delivery in Indiana, and still in '63 when we moved to the Virginia burbs of DC. Shenadoah's Pride Dairy. Remember leaving notes in the milk box for special items like sour cream?

    You actually had to work.

We weren't helping the milkman deliver his product just neighborhood imps hitching rides thru back alleys and chomping chunks of ice. Can imagine if some delivery person allowed brats today to get on the bumper of his truck. Child abuse, law suits, and who knows what else would be levied against him.

Or maybe the same thing would happen in today's world to someone making a kid milk a cow.

The stats I found were about 6/100K. However, it's not just murders that show us to be a most repugnant species. There are all kinds of terrible deeds brought to light, daily, on any number of internet sites.

Also, take that 6/100,000/yr. murder rate, apply it to a world population of some 7.8 B people, and you come up with 468,000 murders a year. Divide that by 365 and you get about 1300 murders/day. Divide that by 24 and get about 53/hour, or, about, one murder a minute, every hour, everyday, all year long.

    The math:

    7,800,000,000/100,000=78,000X6=468,000/365=1,282.19/24=53.42/hr.

Yeah, with the above in mind, I'll stick to my original assertion.

    But that's silly.

Numbers are all relative to the size of the population, as you know.

6/100,000 committing murder (yielding on the highly false assumption that no one committed more than one homicide) means that 99,994/100,000 did NOT commit homicide.

Over 99.5% of people did NOT engage in this act.

    Gee...and I thought that I was a pessimist. Well, actually, I know I am.

Before we get O.T. admonished...I never liked milk, even as a kid. When we had graham crackers and milk as our morning elementary school snack, I would get chocolate milk, whereas one of my younger brothers would drink a gallon a day all by himself. The one exception was when I visited a dairy in New Jersey, and they had ice cold fresh whole milk that did not have the cream removed. For some reason, that really tasted good to me...almost like ice cream, it was that rich.

(Now to tie it all together.) I would kill for a glass of that right now. ;)

(And a more serious way to tie "stupid humanity" to this subject.) Exactly why do humans insist on continuing to drink milk long after we are weaned? I can think of no other mammal that does this. It makes no sense.

Thank you. I was just about to ask how a discussion about milk deliveries turned into a comparison of murder rates.
