My mother died in 1991 of kidney failure on my oldest daughter's birthday. My dad died almost exactly 5 years later of cancer. It doesn't seem possible that it's been so long since I've heard their voices. I miss them every single day.
I really had my heart set on living my final years in Galveston, it just never happened. I can remember when I was just a kid and after school I would sell New Paper subscriptions for the Houston Press. We often would make the 45 mile drive to Galveston and work one or two hours after school. I met this older woman living in one of the old garage apartments and she talked to me for a while and told me that she was a published author or book writer. That was so long ago but I still remember the conversation, since those early years Galveston has been ravaged by hurricanes several times. I have cousins that moved there in the early 60s and still there. I only have one or two photos of that mid 60s era but I will post them soon. I have a lot of stuff to share especially photos. Oh before I forget, one of my record breaking accomplishments was to have been across 3 Galveston Bridges. My favorite Bridge was of course the Draw Bridge and I would beg my Grandmother to drive slow so we would catch the bridge going up. ;0)
I love those memories of my time in Lookingglass Oregon I was born there, and might have a pic of the house that still stands. Spot in the road and you miss it, but one thing that someone wouldn't miss is the beauty of the Valley itself. I hear about, and see the devastation in the distance of those hurricanes @Thomas Stillhere I think the hardest decision when the warnings hit, is to hunker down, or head out. Years ago, can't recall the day but it's online somewhere, we had a Tidal Wave hit Crescent City CA where I live now. But I didn't live here until 6 years ago. There are still signs of the damage if you get down around the Harbor end of town where it hit hardest. I'll have to look up your bridges on my Google Earth @Thomas Stillhere That's my main way of distance travel these days.
It's pretty neat and have you tried out the "historical image" view @Thomas Stillhere ? I did this a.m. but not getting anything yet for my home-town. Looks like only aerial shots, you can't get down to street level in that option. I guess that was wishful thinking for sure
I lost my mother last year two days before Thanksgiving. She was 95 and extremely active right up til the end. We were in the heart of Covid restrictions and couldn't give her the send-off she deserved. It was a sad Thanksgiving and Christmas last but we had her memorial service two days before Thanksgiving this year and there was finally closure. Family was able to come from all over the country and almost a hundred of her friends were there. I think she was looking down and enjoying the event.
