Roger and Webster wrote the song, and it isn't really about ant war, that's what I found in search about song facts.

 

Roger Whittakehis Had a radio program, where he asked where he asked his listeners to send in there poems and he would make a song out of them. The Last Farewell was one of these poems.
Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia.
"Ron A. Webster, a silversmith from Birmingham, England, sent Roger Whittaker his poem entitled "The Last Farewell," and this song became one of the selections to appear on the radio program. It was recorded, and featured on Whittaker's 1971 album New World in the Morning (A Special Kind of Man in the US and Canada). It is one of the fifty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) physical copies worldwide."

Back to the nostalgic 60s for a little while,

 

We got a radio station that changed its format and is now playing only music from the '50s, 60's and early 70's. They call themselves The Mother Ship. I was so happy to find it was on, that I emailed the station and told them so they could get some positive feedback, otherwise how would they know anyone is listening? I was pleased to get a response thanking me. The station has picked up where a long time favorite station left off playing music from that time period. It was WARM, the Mighty 590 and it was locked in for years.

 

we only have classic rock station here, wish we had the 60s,70s music here. I liked the pop do whop of that era.

You are one lucky man, in the UK all the radio station seem to be geared for the 'modern' stuff.
