We'll have to do it again sometime. I find myself in Southern Maine at least a half dozen times a year or more.
We're not on the road yet but we're planning on driving to the UP of Michigan for the 4th of July. That's the weekend that everyone comes home, although I haven't been back for several years. This year, the church we all attended is having its 150th birthday, so I'd like to be there for that, too. Plus, of course, I only have four brothers left from my original family, and they're all older than I am. I just hope we're both over being sick by then.
After spending forever in Boston arranging for a rental car that was supposed to have been prearranged, and looking for a place to park our car, we're somewhere east of Boston, but still in Massachusetts, at a Comfort Hotel. We'll be on the road toward Michigan in the morning.
Safe travels, Ken. That's quite a trip. The longest I've driven was a little over 11 hours...DC to Atlanta. You probably have 13-15 hours ahead of you. Are you gonna head back with traffic or hang out in MI for a while?
I used to drive non-stop (except for food and gas) from California to Michigan, and have driven through most of the contiguous US states. I grew up in the UP of Michigan. I am driving back for 1) my brother's funeral; 2) the 150th anniversary of the church my family belonged to; and 3) because the 4th of July is when everyone returns home for a few days. So yeah, we'll be there a few days before heading back. Not long though, as I hate being away from the kitties for too long. Realistically, since my remaining brothers are older than I am, this could be the last time we see one another.
Not me. I once drove 10 hours on a Friday night after work to a river in West VA to go rafting at 5AM the next day, but that's about it for my road warrior experience. I've driven as far south as Atlanta (although I've ridden to Florida as a kid), I've driven as far north as Newark, and I've driven as far west as the southwestern end of W VA for that rafting trip (although Atlanta and the western tip of VA are farther west than that.)
These days, we usually call it a night at about 4:00 or 5:00 pm while traveling. It's not all wussiness, though, because we also have work to do online.
That was me who lived outside of DC for so long, Betty (47 years in Fairfax County.) Other than museums and the restaurants, I've no desire to return to that mess. Ken's heading to the upper peninsula of Michigan for a family gathering.
We are now in Ohio for the night, at a hotel in Middleburg Heights... somewhere in the neighborhood of Toledo, I think. I don't know. The GPS is making my decisions.
