When I was working at the Lake Meade Marina (chef) I’d often go into Boulder and it was a really cool town. It was and maybe it still is Federal property so much of what was found in the rest of Nevada wasn’t allowed in Boulder. The people in town were all super friendly and it just seemed like a real laid back place to live. I think if I had my druthers but Boulder wasn’t on the list, Pahrump has (maybe had) an entire community dedicated to senior living. There’s no doubt that it’s hot there but that’s what swamp coolers are for. Edit: The folks I met in Boulder call the dam Boulder Dam because no President is worth a dam.
My wife checked out Boulder City and just now told me it was more expensive than Henderson. We can't afford "more expensive".
We were told, when it comes to the heat, "like in Palm Springs, most people get up early and get things done when it's still cool". Then again, 110, or so, is still better than minus 10 to 15 degrees and 5 or more inches of snow on the ground. It's definitely time for a change!
What about Laughlin or Bullhead City, near where Frank Sanoica lives/lived ? He seemed to think it was a pretty nice place and it was close to lakes, too.
If my Mapquest skills are correct, Boulder City and Henderson are only 10 miles apart. Are they really that different? I've not traveled in that part of the country. It looks like Boulder City is the burbs of Vegas.
Boulder is on Federal property with no Casinos and when I was there, little tolerance for drugs and hookers and it’s just a few minutes from Lake Meade. The city started as a construction town mostly for those who built the dam. A lot of history there.
I haven't been there in more than fifty years, and I suspect the distance between the two cities has shortened. I liked Boulder City, at least as a place to visit. I never thought of living there, but would rather be there than in Henderson.
Think about it Cody. You save all year to take trips to Vegas for the rodeo thing and between travel and hotels you spend what you have saved. If you lived in Boulder (my preference) you’re 15-20 minutes away from the event thereby needing none of those savings. Also, you’d be no more than 5 or so minutes from the lake where you can either put your boat in the water, rent a runabout or pontoon boat or ….go to the commodore and ask about buying an abandoned boat just by paying the backlogged slip fee. Even if you pay $200 more a month on an apartment, that’s only $2,400 a year and I would guess that you spend about that much or more going to the rodeo thing and there’s no stress on your vehicle. It’s a near wash.
Plus, once you're local you'd probably find some better deals. The ones that you find on the Internet are the ones that are heavily promoted, and you're paying for that advertising. Locals always hear about better deals.
The VA health and help center in Boulder could probably even help out with that too. Home and Apartment owners are always dropping off pamphlets to VA affairs and the like and there’s almost always a cork board with special offers for vets on them.
@Cody Fousnaugh Here is the website for Boulder City location for the Nevada Dept of Veteran Services. link (702) 332-6784 and FAX (702) 332-6762 100 Veterans Memorial Dr. Boulder City, NV 89005
Guess nobody, other than my wife, has checked out the cost of renting a 2-bedroom apartment, with some nice square feet room, in Boulder City. My wife has and knows how expensive it is. The boat storage we chose, and are now paying monthly for, is very close to Lake Mead and a marina/ramp. The address is in Boulder City, but it's not in the city itself. We got the new carburetor, for the boat, in Monday, but the marine service isn't open on Sunday/Monday, so took it to them yesterday afternoon. This is a "new" carburetor, not a rebuilt one like the one on the boat right now. As far as that big rodeo (NFR) goes in Vegas (Thomas-Mack Center), we don't go to it, we watch it on big-screen tv's at South Point. However, we have gone to Cowboy Christmas (lots of western shopping) at the Convention Center. Don't buy anything, but a lot of fun walking around. We also have had breakfast buffet at MGM and Cosmopolitan and dinner at South Point. They cost, but terrific buffets! And, to top it all off, have went to Autograph Sessions of Tie-Down Ropers and Team Ropers that we have watched all year long on the Cowboy Channel. Then, on top of the NFR, we'd really like to drive up to Reno for their 10-day rodeo ($800,000 purse), that we are currently watching on the Cowboy Channel nightly. And, drive down to Lake Havasu for their rodeo and perhaps take our boat with us. Summers get pretty dang hot in southern Nevada, but there sure is a whole lot more for us to do than where we are now. Some things cost, some things are free.
I understand where Cody is coming from on rent, Our apt in Texas 938 sq ft 2br 2 full baths 11 years ago was $848, When we left in Dec 2022 was going up to $1700 . That does not include all extra charges. Then there were fees for this and that. If your living on a fixed income it was hard,as many of you know.
It is interesting (and sad) that there are a lot of low income housing opportunites springing up around here. Government and Blackrock involvement to help give those from Chicago projects a leg up. The projects were supposed to do that. But the inhabitants ruined them. I wonder if the government hasn't interfered with housing in Colorado to provide low income housing. Some here look nice although a friend just informed me that crime has worked its way into her building.
