My husband was born and raised at our nearest seaside resort CC... and we still visit there often.. but being an Island it's said that in the UK even those the most inland are only 70 miles from the nearest beach. We're pretty close compared to most apart from those who live on the coast. I was born and raised in Scotland as you know, but I never lived anywhere near mountains while living in the city...until I moved to the Isle of Arran when I was 18 , and I lived about 50 feet from the beach and the glorious Goatfell mountains were within walking distance...very popular with tourists and mountaineers.. The mountains in Spain are just a 10 minute drive from my home, but I can see them clearly from my windows... and the beach is a 5 minute drive...
I like beaches, but I rarely sit on them. I'll occasionally walk along the sands, or if it's really hot I'll go in the water..but it's not the sands i love it's the cragginess of the rocks...and the glorious DMS ( dimethyl sulphide.) aroma which kinda feels like it's clearing your lungs... it probably isn't... ..but I too have a passion for Islands.. for all the flora and fauna, the animals not seen on the mainland.... the bracing air, the often different mentality of the locals..etc.. the further north you go to the small islands in the north of the Uk, the more obvious the difference ..the calmness of the people , is notable
Must be what I'm seeing then - although I'm sure I've seen some nice spots in 'Fresno' too Too late to check now
I wouldn't want to live in the mountains, or on the beach, especially the Atlantic. For sightseeing trips, I much prefer the mountains. Would like to live in low country where you have a nice view of rocky mountains.
Thing is, elk, deer and moose can't be found at an ocean beach and we like all three. No wonder we want to move back to Colorado. Relaxing on a nice lake beach, with a powerboat "beached" in the water/sand next to us was so very nice. When we lived in Parker, we'd do that at Chatfield Reservoir with our bowrider boat. Oh, "those were the days"! Perhaps again, in the future.
I would love to live near the ocean, or one of the bays/inlets near the ocean, preferably near the Pacific Ocean; but near the Atlantic would be awesome, too. I LOVE mountains, and growing up in north Idaho, we had some beautiful mountains around us. Later, I lived for many years in Western Washington, where we had Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, and the whole Cascade range that we could see every day, and I really loved that, and A special part of the morning was looking to see if we could see the mountains, or if they were in the clouds. This is Mt. Rainier with lenticular clouds overhead. They look like flying saucers (spaceships) to me.
Nice comment on lenticular clouds, @Yvonne Smith ! Not everyone knows what they are named. Lenticular means "resembling almonds".
I would always pick mountains, but my spouse is a beach person, so we spend time at both when we can.
@Holly Saunders A tribute to sulfur-containing compounds: "Employees of the Union Oil Company of California reported first in 1938 that turkey vultures would gather at the site of any gas leak. After finding that this was caused by traces of ethanethiol in the gas it was decided to boost the amount of ethanethiol in the gas, to make detections of leaks easier."
Just been looking at some pictures Re- Fresno As I said some really lovely places - Woodward Regional Park is gorgeous, do you go there ? Shinzen Japanese Garden - so lovely Kearney Mansion Museum Also saw beautiful scenic views too - couldn't capture one picture !
A mountain person for sure. On our road trips out of state I always found them magnificent to look at. My thoughts would always wander to the makings on the roads through them. I remember when I was younger looking through bridal magazines the honeymoon recommendations of the Poconos Mountains. It's probably commericalized quite a bit now but for me back then it was an awesome place to have a honeymoon.
My daughter lives deep and high in the mountains... she has 5 acres of land with almond and fruit orchards... it's a heckava drive on an unmade road to get to her place from the main road...but it's a little piece of heaven... her nearest neighbour is a long way away on the opposite mountain ...
Woodward Park is near my house and I used to go there with my ex...we would walk there. Also took the grandsons when they would visit and were much younger....lots of ducks and geese to feed. @Patsy Faye Just not a place I'd go by myself. When I was in better shape, Ive walked there and back...round trip was about 5 miles. The Japanese Gardens are in there but it's so hot most of the time and when the weather is good, it's usually winter.
