Secondhand stores, flea markets, auctions, thrift stores, Goodwill, Salvation Army, garage, tag, yard and estates sales, hand me downs and curb side tosses each has in the past and present are resources to me.
Off the subject of what men do, at the Dallas / Fort Worth Rescue Mission store an older woman had passed and her daughter brought her clothes to the store. In one box there were around 100 brand new sets of bra’s and undies with the tags still on them. She must have been kin to J. Kennedy Onassis who, as the story goes, would wear no underwear twice nor sleep on the same satin sheets twice. With that in mind, I have often found brand new clothing at thrift stores.
I guess you never volunteered for the SA...Anyway, as I said, the clothes donated by the deceased's family were NEVER worn by the person AFTER he died.
When my boys were little I would find trophies and replace the plaques with stickers as rewards for accomplishments they made at home or school.
The trophies are automatically given for the number of posts, number of likes and few other things. Normally when a trophy is awarded it will say what it is for. They’re a nice way to say thank you for your continued input in hopes that you stick around to get more trophies. When you hit something like 10K posts I think @Ken Anderson sends a parade down your street or something. Would you believe, 3 boy scouts playing “The Thunderer” with Jew’s harps?
In the 1970-80s, I used to get clothes at the Thrift stores to use for the material for making my clothes on my treadle sewing machine. Amazing all the denim in those old wide-leg jeans. I made vests and skirts and lots of cutoffs. Back in the day, I would get old phonographs, radios, and small appliances that needed repair real cheap and repair them and make a few bucks. I collected all kinds of things I bought at the yard sales and antique stores and have since got rid of most of it except several hundred pieces of depression and 50's glass and a few odds and ends. Spent way more than I made, but had a lot of fun and travels collecting it.
I have a nice Golf Trophy that I bought years ago at a second hand store. I have it on display in my Game Room. I have never played a game of golf. Hal
Maybe in your area men don't change their shape pass 50 y/o. Again, all the clothes that were in those closets you mentioned were worn BEFORE the guy passed to better life. Trust me, the clothes he worn in his "last voyage" won't be around ever again.
I loved second hand stores and was my first choice when in Canada also when I sailed down the east coast of US I would look for lawn sales and thrift stores. Some things I would buy is electronic flashes for cameras the capacitor inside is worth to me $20 all on its own. Now in the D.R there is a lot less but we get used clothing sent down here for the poor and it comes in bails my wife has bought some for resale and in the pocket of one pair of shorts was a $100 bill that almost paid for the bail.
